Most people give Dehradun one night on the way to somewhere else. That is a pity, because the valley rewards a slower pace. The old town, the forest campus, the monastery and the hill above Dehradun each deserve their own unhurried hours. There is no reason to see them in one go. With five days you can do one thing in the morning, rest in the afternoon, and still have the evening.
This page is the shape of the week, not the small print. Fees, opening hours, closed days and road diversions change, and we keep them dated and sourced on each place’s own page. We link to those as we go. Read them the evening before.
What stays the same
- The name
- “Dun” or “doon” means the low land at the foot of a mountain range. “Dehra” is said to come from the camp (dera) Guru Ram Rai pitched here in Aurangzeb’s time; the town grew around it. The district puts the city at 640 m (2,100 ft) above sea level.District Dehradun: About the district, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Dehradun in March (IMD normals)
- Average high 27.4 °C, average low 13.1 °C. 45.8 mm of rain over about 3 rainy days, and about 4 days with thunder (1991–2020 normals).IMD climatological table, Dehradun, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Daylight, March 2027
- Sunrise about 6:44 am on 1 March and 6:09 am on 31 March. Sunset about 6:16 pm on 1 March and 6:35 pm on 31 March. Timeanddate.com agrees to within a minute. Behind hills the sun goes a few minutes earlier.Sunrise-Sunset.org: Dehradun, March 2027, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Mussoorie
- About 35–40 km by road. The district page gives 36 km from Dehradun railway station, and in another line 38 km from Dehradun; we go by the railway-station figure. Lal Tibba (Depot Hill) is its highest point, with a Himalayan view on clear days.District Dehradun: Mussoorie, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Forest Research Institute
- Established in 1906, on an estate of about 450 hectares. The main building mixes Greco-Roman and colonial styles.FRI: History, checked 1 Nov 2026

The shape of the week
Check-in is from 2 pm and check-out is by 11 am, so five nights gives you an arrival afternoon, four full days and a departure morning. We plan only one real outing a day, and we keep two of the days light on purpose. A slow trip is not a short trip stretched out. It is the same few places, seen at the right hour, with time left over.
- Day 1: arrive, settle in, a short evening walk in the old town.
- Day 2: the Forest Research Institute in the morning, a quiet afternoon at home.
- Day 3: up the hill to Mussoorie and Landour, back before dark.
- Day 4: a rest day. Breakfast late, the courtyard, Mindrolling in the late afternoon.
- Day 5: one choice: the birds at Asan, the forest at Rajaji, or the river at Rishikesh.
- Departure morning: pack slowly, check out by 11 am.
Day 1: arrive and stay close
We meet you at the gate, show you the house and talk through the week with you. Unpack properly. You’re here for five nights, so use the cupboards rather than living out of a bag. The green room and the red room each have a king bed, and the living room with its indigo arch is where most guests end up in the evening.
If you have energy left, go to the Clock Tower and Paltan Bazaar in the late afternoon, when the light is soft and the shops are busy. Our Instagram bio says “Step into the slow, nostalgic charm of Old Dehradun”, and this is where it starts. Don’t try to do the whole walk today. Our Old Dehradun heritage walk has the full route, with Darbar Sahib, for another evening if you want it.
Day 2: the forest campus, then nothing
Morning: the Forest Research Institute. It is the one Dehradun sight we’d tell everyone to see. Go in the morning session, walk the long front of the main building, then do one or two museums and stop. FRI sells entry by session and has closed at short notice, so read our FRI page the night before for the current fees, sessions and notices.
Afternoon: home. This is the first rest. The courtyard catches the morning sun, the kitchen is full, and there is a desk and fast Wi-Fi if one of you has to check in with work. In the evening, if you feel like a stroll, take it up Rajpur Road.
Day 3: one day on the hill
This is the long day of the week, so it goes in the middle, when you’re rested. Leave early, by about 7:30 am on a weekday and earlier on a weekend. The road climbs in a long run of bends, so give it more time than the distance suggests. Park once and walk up through Landour towards Lal Tibba while the light is clear, then come down to the Mall Road for lunch.
Start back by about 4 pm. Sunset in March 2027 is between about 6:15 and 6:35 pm, and earlier behind the hills, and we’d rather you did the bends in daylight. Up there it can be much colder than in the valley, so carry a warm layer even if Dehradun feels like spring. Parking, traffic plans and what we’d skip are on our Mussoorie day trip page.
Day 4: the rest day
Plan nothing before noon. Order our pahadi breakfast for this morning: mandua roti, aloo and seasonal fruit, ₹350 per guest. Tell us the night before. Read in the courtyard. Cook lunch if you like cooking. If you’ve never eaten mandua, our Garhwali food guide explains what else to look for in the bazaar.
Late in the afternoon, go to Mindrolling Monastery. The Great Stupa and its garden are at their best in the low light, and it is a quiet place to end a quiet day. The Tibetan market nearby is good for an unhurried look around. Our Mindrolling page has what we know about visiting hours.
Day 5: pick one
By now you know what you like about the valley. Choose one of these, not two.
- Birds: Asan Barrage, west of the city. It is known for its winter birds, so in March we’d go early in the month rather than late. Go early in the morning and take binoculars. Our Asan page has what to expect.
- Forest: a jeep safari at Rajaji. The park has a season, gates and an official booking site, all on our Rajaji page. Book ahead.
- River: a morning on the ghats and bridges at Rishikesh, home by late afternoon. Stay on the steps. The Ganga is cold and fast even where it looks calm, so keep children and dogs back from the edge.
If you’d rather stay in town, Lachhiwala is a shady half-day under the sal trees. Check its weekly closed day on our page first.
What we leave out, and why
People ask about Robber’s Cave and Sahastradhara. Both mean wet feet and weekend crowds, and on a slow week we’d rather you had one more unhurried morning. If you do go, don’t bathe in the pools or the stream, and skip them altogether after heavy rain. We also leave out Dhanaulti, Chakrata and Kempty Falls. Each wants its own long day in the car, and that is the opposite of this trip.
Weekends, March and the monsoon
If your five days include a Saturday and Sunday, put Mussoorie on a weekday. The hill is a different place at the weekend. March is mild in the valley, with the odd thunderstorm, so keep a light jacket and an umbrella in the car. If your dates fall around Holi, read our Dehradun in March guide first. The old town around Darbar Sahib gets busy at Jhanda Mela time, and that guide has the dates as they are announced.
Outside March the same week works, but in the monsoon, roughly July to September, hill roads can close after landslides and rivers rise fast. Check the warnings the evening before and again in the morning, using our list in how to check roads and weather. As of the day you travel, go by what IMD’s Dehradun centre and the district say, and keep Day 3 and Day 5 loose so you can swap them.
Why one base works for a slow week
Five nights in one place means you unpack once and the car stays parked in the courtyard on the rest days. We live ten minutes away, so if a day needs changing, tell us on WhatsApp and we’ll suggest the swap. On Instagram we wrote, “We help our guests to experience the best of local places.” On a slow week that mostly means telling you which day to leave empty.
Fyonli Nest sleeps 4 adults, or up to 6 guests with children aged 2–12, and dogs are welcome if you tell us beforehand. Quiet hours start at 10 pm, which suits a week of early mornings. If you’re thinking of staying longer than five nights, our long stays page covers working from the house. Otherwise, see the rooms and send us your dates.
