Mindrolling is one of the six great monasteries of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. The original was founded in Tibet in 1676. In 1965, Khochhen Rinpoche and a small group of monks began rebuilding it on land near Clement Town, at the southern edge of Dehradun. Today it is a working monastery and a college: the Ngagyur Nyingma College, set up in 1991, teaches a nine-year course in Buddhist philosophy. So when you visit, you are walking into people’s home and classroom, not a museum.
Mindrolling and the Sakya Centre: the facts
- Great Stupa visiting hours
- Every day of the week from 9:00 am, the monastery says. Daytime visits need no advance arrangement. The monastery gives no closing time; Incredible India lists 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. We go by the monastery for the start time and plan to leave well before dark.Mindrolling: Visitor Information, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Upper floors of the stupa
- Incredible India says the upper floors are accessible on Sundays. The monastery’s own pages don’t mention this, so if the upper floors matter to you, ask at the monastery on the day.Incredible India: Mindrolling Monastery, checked 1 Nov 2026

The Great Stupa
The stupa is why most people come. Its full name is the Stupa of Descent from Devaloka, and it marks the day the Buddha came back down from the heaven of the thirty-three gods. That is why it was inaugurated on 28 October 2002: the monastery chose the day of that descent. Its calendar still marks the day as Lha Bab Düchen, which falls on 1 November in 2026.
Unlike many stupas, you can go inside. The floors hold shrine rooms with murals in the Tibetan style: a room for the Buddha Shakyamuni, one for Guru Padmasambhava with his eight forms and twenty-five disciples, and the Four Immeasurables room with statues of Mindrolling’s past heads. On the facade, there is a large painting of Maitreya, the future Buddha. The monastery says relics are kept inside, too.
Near the stupa stands the large statue of Guru Padmasambhava, consecrated on 3 March 2017 by the Sakya Trizin. More than five thousand people gathered for that day, the monastery’s page says. So the head of the Sakya school, whose own seat is on Rajpur Road, blessed the Nyingma monastery’s statue.
How to behave at a working monastery
Mindrolling asks people who plan an overnight or longer stay to get in touch first, because of the “contemplative, scholarly, and religious activities” going on all the time. A day visit needs no permission, but the same spirit applies. What we tell our guests:
- Dress with shoulders and knees covered. Take your shoes off where you see others leave theirs.
- Walk around the stupa and turn prayer wheels clockwise, as is the custom at Tibetan Buddhist sites.
- Keep your voice down inside the shrine rooms, and don’t sit with your feet pointing at an altar.
- Look for a sign before taking photos indoors, and ask before photographing a monk. If a puja is on, watch from the back.
- Leave the gardens as you found them. We’d keep music off and save the picnic for somewhere else.
The Sakya Centre on Rajpur Road
The Sakya Centre is the main seat of the Sakya order, one of the four schools of Tibetan Buddhism. It was founded in 1964 by the 41st Sakya Trizin, first in a rented hall and then in an old bungalow at 187 Rajpur Road, which the Centre later bought. It is a working monastic school, teaching young monks ritual, music, dance and art, and it has no big stupa like Mindrolling’s.
That is also why we’d call ahead. The Centre’s contact page lists a phone number but no visiting hours, and its puja schedule runs on the lunar calendar, with drubchös (multi-day group rituals) through the year. A short call the day before tells you whether visitors are welcome that morning.
The two monasteries sit at opposite ends of the city. By our measurement on OpenStreetMap (1 November 2026), the Sakya Centre is about 10 km by road from the Clock Tower, northwards up Rajpur Road, and Mindrolling about 15 km south. Allow for city traffic in between.
The Tibetan Market in winter
Dehradun’s Tibetan Market is a row of stalls beside the Parade Ground in the city centre, known for winter clothes and jackets. The Dehradun Police’s New Year traffic plan in December 2025 listed “Parade Ground near Tibetan Market” as a designated car park for 100 cars (Hindustan Times, 25 December 2025). Winter is its busiest season; a 2017 Times of India report said the traders’ association had started fixing prices so there was no haggling. We haven’t seen anything newer on prices, so treat that as history.
This winter’s season: as of 1 November 2026, we found no dated notice or local news report of the 2026–27 Tibetan winter market in Dehradun, its dates or any change of place. Not yet announced. We’ll update this page when it is.
How we’d spend the day
Our Instagram says “We help our guests to experience the best of local places”, and for this one our advice is simple: don’t rush it.
- Go to Mindrolling in the morning. The stupa receives visitors from 9 am. Give it two hours: the shrine rooms, a slow walk round the garden, a look at the Guru Padmasambhava statue.
- Spend the afternoon in the centre. Come back to the Parade Ground for the Tibetan Market, then walk on to the Clock Tower and Paltan Bazaar. Our Old Dehradun heritage walk has the route.
- Keep the Sakya Centre for another day. It sits on Rajpur Road, the way up to Mussoorie, so it fits better with our Mussoorie day trip than with Mindrolling.
What we’d skip: trying to do both monasteries and the market in one day. You’ll spend most of it in traffic, and a monastery is the last place you want to hurry. If you’d like to see a ceremony, look at the Mindrolling calendar first and call the monastery to ask whether visitors can watch. Losar, the Tibetan New Year, falls on 7 February 2027.
Shoes come off at the shrine-room doors, and winter mornings in Dehradun are cold. As we put it on Instagram in October, “Bring light jackets and enjoy pre winters”. By December you’ll want something warmer, and socks for when your shoes come off. Our Dehradun in winter guide has more on what to pack.
If a calm day at the monastery is the plan, you can end it somewhere warm. Fyonli Nest has two bedrooms, a courtyard that catches the morning sun and heaters in winter, and we meet every guest at the gate.
