We run a homestay in Dehradun, so read this knowing that. We’ve tried to be fair, and we say plainly when Mussoorie is the better choice.
The short answer
Stay in Mussoorie if the hills are the point of the trip: cool summer days, a chance of snow in winter, and Mall Road and Landour on foot. Stay in Dehradun if you want an easy arrival, somewhere to park, a city that doesn’t revolve around the holiday season, and the option of going up to Mussoorie for a day instead of sleeping there.
So, is it better to stay in Mussoorie or Dehradun? For a short summer break or for snow, Mussoorie. For a longer stay, a work trip, a long weekend when the hill road jams, or a trip that takes in more than one place, Dehradun.
Dehradun and Mussoorie side by side
Temperatures and rainfall are India Meteorological Department long-term averages.
| Compared | Dehradun | Mussoorie |
|---|---|---|
| Altitude | About 435 m | About 2,000 m |
| Summer (May–June) | Hot. Average highs of 34–35°C, and it can pass 40°C | Mild. Average highs of about 23°C |
| Monsoon (July–September) | Very wet: about 620 mm in July and 715 mm in August | Also very wet: about 630 mm in July and 550 mm in August. Rain can close the road up |
| Winter (December–February) | Cool days, cold nights. January averages about 20°C by day and 7°C at night | Cold. January averages about 10°C by day and 3°C at night |
| Snow | Not something to plan for in the city. You drive up to look for it | Usually a few spells between December and February, though some winters bring little |
| Crowds | The state’s most populous city. Everyday city traffic, all year | About 3 million visitors in 2019. Busiest in summer (April to June), on weekends and at New Year |
| Parking | Depends on where you stay. Ours is in the courtyard | Tight: about 2,000 official spaces against 3,000–4,000 cars a day in peak season (2024) |
| Prices | Varies widely. Compare on your actual dates | Like any resort town, expect peak weeks to cost more and book up early. Ahead of New Year’s Eve 2025, the hotel association said about half its properties were already booked |
| Getting there | Railway station in the city. Jolly Grant airport is about 20 km from the centre | No railway or airport of its own. Both are in Dehradun, then it’s up the hill road |
The drive between them
Mussoorie sits above Dehradun at the top of a winding hill road. Published distances vary: Incredible India puts Mussoorie 28 km north of Dehradun, and the Dehradun district administration says 38 km. The cab company Savaari puts the drive at about an hour to an hour and a half. That’s on a clear road.
Busy days are another matter. On weekends in peak season, jams can start as far back as Kuthal Gate in Dehradun, and at the end of May 2026 the Garhwal Post reported visitors stuck for hours on the Mussoorie-Dehradun road. Over New Year’s Eve 2025, Dehradun police diverted routes on 30 and 31 December to avoid long jams. In the monsoon, heavy rain can shut the road: in September 2025, cloudbursts breached it at several points and it stayed closed for at least two days.
If you’d rather walk, the Kipling Trail climbs from Rajpur village in Dehradun to Mussoorie. It’s about 9 km and takes 2 to 3 hours.
Coming for snow? It falls up in Mussoorie rather than in Dehradun, and some winters bring little. Our guide to Dehradun in winter has more on the cold months down here.
The year-round case
Mussoorie’s economy runs mainly on tourism, and it moves with the seasons. The district administration describes the town as thronged with holidaymakers in summer. In 2025, the state tourism department said visitor numbers rise in April and June, with large numbers on weekends too. Winter has its own pull: the winterline sunsets from mid-October to mid-January, the Winterline Carnival in December, and the hope of snow.
The crowds have grown enough that from 1 August 2025 the state tourism department made online registration mandatory for visitors to Mussoorie. Check the current rules before you go.
Dehradun is the state’s most populous city and its winter capital. People live and work here all year. It has its own traffic, but it doesn’t depend on the holiday calendar the way a hill resort does, which makes it an easier place to stay put for longer. Winter days are milder too: January highs average about 20°C.
The trade-off is heat. May and June in Dehradun average highs of 34–35°C. If you’re coming then, ask us on WhatsApp what the house is like in the heat before you book.
Who should choose which
Choose Mussoorie if
- You’re coming in May or June and want cool days. Average highs there run about 11–12°C lower than in Dehradun.
- Snow is the point. Go between December and February, and keep your plans loose, because it isn’t guaranteed.
- You want to step out of the door into the hills: Mall Road, Landour, and views north-east to the Himalayan snow ranges.
- It’s a short midweek trip and you’d rather not drive up and down.
Choose Dehradun if
- You’re arriving by train or plane and want to settle in without another hour or more on a hill road.
- You’re travelling on a long weekend or at New Year, when the hill road and Mussoorie’s parking are at their worst, and you’d rather choose which day to drive up, or skip it.
- You’re driving and want the car parked where you sleep, not in a town short of spaces.
- You’re staying a week or more, working, or travelling with family or a dog, and want a kitchen more than a view.
- You’re visiting in winter and want milder days, with snow a drive away when it falls.
Plenty of trips work either way: stay in one and see the other in a day. If you were looking for a homestay near Mussoorie, be clear about what “near” means. Dehradun is at the bottom of that hill road, an hour or more below the town, not up in the hills.
Why we think Dehradun works as a base
We’re Shalini and Aarushi, two friends from Dehradun, and Fyonli Nest is our two-bedroom homestay here. This is what you get if you choose the city:
- The green room and the red room, each with a king bed, and a living room with an indigo arch and a wooden sofa. It sleeps 4 adults, or up to 6 guests with children aged 2–12.
- Parking in the courtyard, so the car is there when you want to drive up the hill.
- A full kitchen, and a pahadi breakfast on request: mandua roti, aloo and seasonal fruit, ₹350 per guest per morning. Tell us the night before.
- Fast Wi-Fi and a desk for work. Heaters in winter.
- Dogs welcome. Tell us beforehand.
- We live ten minutes away and meet you at the gate.

Check-in is from 2 pm and check-out by 11 am. Send us your dates and we’ll confirm availability on WhatsApp. There’s no payment until we do, and cancellation is free until 7 days before arrival. See the rooms and send a request, or message us on WhatsApp if you want to talk the Dehradun-or-Mussoorie question through for your dates.
