Itinerary

Dehradun and Mussoorie in 2 days: an itinerary from one base

Two nights, one day in the valley and one up the hill, without packing your bags twice. This is the plan we’d hand a friend, with a weekday version and a weekend version, because on the Mussoorie road the day of the week matters more than anything else.

Most people try to fit Dehradun and Mussoorie into one day. It can be done, but you spend it in the car. Split it over two days and each place gets a proper morning. You sleep in the same bed both nights, and you go up the hill on the day that suits the weather and the traffic, not the day a hotel booking fixed.

This page is the shape of the trip. The details that change, like entry fees, opening sessions, parking rules and police traffic plans, live on each place’s own page, where we keep them dated and sourced. We link to them as we go, so read those the evening before.

The shape of the trip: two nights

Check-in is from 2 pm and check-out is by 11 am, so two nights gives you an arrival day, one full day, and a departure morning. We put the valley on the arrival and departure days, because Dehradun’s sights are close together and work in half-days. The full day in the middle goes to Mussoorie, because the hill needs an early start and a whole day.

  • Day 1, Dehradun: a morning sight, check in from 2 pm, an evening in the old town.
  • Day 2, Mussoorie: up early, Landour on foot, Mall Road, back down before dark.
  • Departure morning: check out by 11 am, one more Dehradun sight on your way out.

The weekday version

If you can choose, choose this one. Say you arrive on a Tuesday and leave on a Thursday.

Day 1: Dehradun

Morning: the Forest Research Institute. If you reach Dehradun early, by the morning train or after an early drive, start here with the bags still in the car. The main building and the long lawns are the reason to go, and the museums if you have time. FRI sells entry by session and shuts on some days at short notice, so read our FRI page for this month’s fees, sessions and closures before you go.

Afternoon: check in and slow down. Check-in is from 2 pm, and we meet you at the gate. Take an hour in the courtyard. You have a long day tomorrow.

Evening: Old Dehradun. The Clock Tower, Paltan Bazaar and the lanes around them are the town the city grew from. Our Instagram bio says “Step into the slow, nostalgic charm of Old Dehradun”, and the late afternoon, when the bazaar fills up, is when we like it most. The full route, with Darbar Sahib and Khalanga, is in our Old Dehradun heritage walk. On this trip, do just the Clock Tower and the bazaar, eat there, and get home early.

Day 2: Mussoorie

Leave early. Get on the road by about 7:30 am. Mussoorie sits at about 2,000 m and the road from the valley climbs it in a long run of bends, so give it more time than the distance suggests. The bus, parking and the police plans are all on our Mussoorie day trip page. Read it the night before.

Morning: Landour on foot. Park once, near the Picture Palace end of Mall Road if there is room, and walk up through Landour Bazaar to Char Dukan and Lal Tibba while the light is clear. It is steep. Wear proper shoes and carry water. Landour has its own rules for cars, which is one more reason to leave the car where it is.

Afternoon: Mall Road, then down. Walk back down for lunch and a slow hour on Mall Road. Mussoorie was laid out on this ridge by Captain Young in 1827, the district administration says (some histories give 1825), and the old part still feels like it. Start back down by about 3:30 pm. In mid-December the sun sets around 5:20 pm, earlier behind the hills, and we’d rather you did the bends in daylight.

What we’d skip: Kempty Falls. The district’s page puts it 15 km from Mussoorie on the Yamunotri road (another line on the same page says about 11 km), which turns a comfortable day into a long one. Leave it for another trip. If you do go, look from the viewing areas, and stay out of the water.

Departure morning

Check out by 11 am and pick one last sight on the way out. Our choice is Mindrolling Monastery and its Great Stupa, a calm last hour after a busy day on the hill. If you have children with you, swap it for the Dehradun Zoo, but check its weekly closed day on our zoo page first.

The weekend version

Most people only have Friday and Saturday nights. That works, but Mussoorie on a Saturday is a different place from Mussoorie on a Tuesday. Weekend traffic from Delhi and the plains is the biggest thing that goes wrong on this trip, and the police run special traffic plans for it. So the weekend version moves things around.

  • Friday: arrive and do Old Dehradun. Drive up or take the train, check in from 2 pm, and spend the evening at the Clock Tower and Paltan Bazaar. Keep it short. Saturday starts early.
  • Saturday: Mussoorie, but earlier. Be on the road by 7 am. Arriving before the queues build matters more than anything else you do that day. If the police are sending cars into the King Craig lot when you reach it, take it and go on by local taxi. Our day trip page explains how that works. Do Landour first, and start down by mid-afternoon.
  • Sunday: check out by 11 am, then FRI. Take the car, do one FRI session, and head home after lunch. If you’re driving back to Delhi, read our Delhi to Dehradun page for the road.

If the forecast is bad for Saturday, swap: Dehradun on Saturday, then check out early on Sunday, go up to Mussoorie for the morning, and come back down by early afternoon to start for home.

Christmas, New Year and the monsoon

This winter Christmas falls on Friday 25 December 2026 and New Year’s Day on Friday 1 January 2027. Both are long weekends, and Mussoorie gets very busy over both. If you’re here that week, put the hill on a weekday between the two. Our New Year in Dehradun page tracks the traffic plans as they come out.

In the monsoon, roughly July to September, the hill road can close at short notice after landslides or a road sinking. Check the official advisories the evening before and again in the morning, using our list in how to check roads and weather. Keep the Mussoorie day loose so you can move it.

What we’d leave out of two days

People ask us about Robber’s Cave and Sahastradhara. Both are fine half-days, but both mean water, wet shoes and a site that has been hit by floods recently. On a two-day trip they push something better out. Come back for them on a longer stay. If snow is the point of your trip, that’s a different plan: see snow near Dehradun.

Why one base in the valley

The valley is milder than the hill, and in December that matters most in the evenings. You come back down to heaters, a full kitchen and the car parked in the courtyard, and you don’t check out of one place and into another in the middle of a two-day trip. If you’re still weighing it up, we’ve compared the two in Dehradun or Mussoorie.

On Instagram we wrote that “We help our guests to experience the best of local places.” On this trip that mostly means helping you pick the Mussoorie day. Tell us your dates and we’ll tell you which day we’d go up. On the slower mornings, our pahadi breakfast (mandua roti, aloo, seasonal fruit) is ₹350 per guest, on request; tell us the night before. The house has two bedrooms with king beds and sleeps 4 adults, or up to 6 guests with children aged 2–12, and dogs are welcome if you tell us beforehand. See the green and red rooms and send your dates.
