New Year in Dehradun, and how to see Mussoorie without the jam

New Year’s Day 2027 is a Friday, so this is a long weekend and the hill road will be busy. Here is what the police did last year, what’s announced so far for this year, and the quieter way we’d plan it.

How the dates fall this year

Christmas is Friday 25 December 2026 and New Year’s Day is Friday 1 January 2027. That makes two long weekends in a row, and a lot of people will drive up from Delhi and the plains for both. Many of them are heading for Mussoorie, up one winding hill road. The district administration puts it about 35 km from Dehradun railway station (checked 1 November 2026).

On a normal weekday that road is easy. On a holiday weekend it can be the slowest part of the whole trip. On 3 October 2026, the Saturday of the Gandhi Jayanti long weekend, ETV Bharat reported that the 35 km from Dehradun to Mussoorie was taking close to five hours, even though the traffic police had issued a plan a couple of days earlier. Expect New Year to be at least as busy.

The Mussoorie traffic plan: what last year looked like

Dehradun Police now put out a traffic plan for the big holiday weekends: in 2026 there were plans for a May weekend and the early-October long weekend, and last winter for Christmas and New Year. This year’s New Year plan isn’t out yet. Last year’s is the best guide to what to expect, so here is what it did.

  • Fixed routes up and down. Traffic from Delhi via Mohand was sent through ISBT and the Shimla Bypass to the Mussoorie road. Traffic from Haridwar and Rishikesh went round by the Ring Road, Sahastradhara Crossing and IT Park to Kuthal Gate. The way down was a different route, by Old Rajpur Road and IT Park, to keep the main city roads clear.
  • One-way roads in Mussoorie. The busy roads in town were to be made one-way, with traffic turned away from Library Chowk, Picture Palace and Kulri Bazaar when they filled up. The police also said drones would watch the traffic.
  • Park and ride. Past the parking trigger, cars stopped at King Craig and people went on by local taxi or shuttle. Plan for this. It adds time and a fare to your day.
  • Diversions in Dehradun too. When Rajpur Road or the Clock Tower jammed, traffic was diverted at several chowks, and the police named city car parks, such as Parade Ground, Rangers Ground and the MDDA parking near the Clock Tower.

As of 1 November 2026, Dehradun Police have not issued a New Year 2026–27 plan. Last year it was reported in mid-December. Check the Uttarakhand Traffic Police page and local news in the week before you travel, and again on the morning you drive. We’ll update this page when the plan is out.

Registering for Mussoorie

In July 2025, Outlook Traveller reported that online registration would be mandatory for visitors to Mussoorie from 1 August 2025, with the number of people, vehicle number and dates, and that police would check it at the entry barriers at King Craig and Picture Palace. That report named the Dehradun Smart City portal. Uttarakhand Tourism’s Tourist Care portal now has its own Mussoorie registration page, which is the one we’d use. The two sources don’t agree on the portal, so check the current rule and how it works before you set off. The barrier is not the place to find out.

Winterline Carnival 2026

The Mussoorie Winterline Carnival is a late-December festival in Mussoorie. Last year it ran from 24 to 29 December 2025. This year’s carnival is expected around the last week of December again, but the dates are not yet announced. On 29 October the District Magistrate reviewed preparations, asked for strong traffic and security arrangements because of the crowds expected, and suggested events on local history, folk art and regional food at Mussoorie’s heritage sites. Wait for the official dates on the District Dehradun notices page before you plan around it.

If you want the carnival, go up on a weekday morning while it’s on, rather than on the Christmas weekend. You get the carnival without the worst of the road.

A calmer plan: New Year’s Eve in Dehradun, Mussoorie on a weekday morning

This is the plan we’d suggest. It isn’t the only way to do it, but it keeps you off the hill road at the hours everyone else is on it.

  1. Arrive on Wednesday 30 December, in the afternoon. If you’re driving from Delhi, leave after the morning fog lifts in the plains. Check-in is from 2 pm.
  2. Go up to Mussoorie the next morning, early, or skip it until after the weekend. Thursday 31 December is a working day, but it’s also New Year’s Eve, and last year’s heavy-vehicle rules ran from 30 December. So the earlier the better: leave by 8 am, be at the top for the morning, and start down by lunch. If you have the days, we’d go on Monday 4 January instead, when we’d expect most of the holiday crowd to have gone home.
  3. Spend New Year’s Eve in Dehradun. Be back down well before the 5:27 pm sunset. Cook in the full kitchen, sit in, and see the year out somewhere you don’t have to drive back from. Quiet hours at the house start at 10 pm, so this is a calm New Year, not a party one.
  4. Keep 1 January slow. Breakfast in the morning sun in the courtyard (our pahadi breakfast is on request; tell us the night before). If you want to go out, stay in the valley: the Forest Research Institute or an Old Dehradun walk are better holiday-day plans than the hill.
  5. Leave on 2 January, with check-out by 11 am, and expect the return traffic to the plains to be heavy over the weekend.

If you do drive up on a busy day, register for Mussoorie first, fill the tank in Dehradun, carry water and snacks, and take the police’s route even if your map app suggests another. When the police switch to park-and-ride at King Craig, use it rather than trying to drive on into town.

What New Year weather is like

December in Dehradun is dry and bright. On IMD’s 1991–2020 averages, highs are about 22 °C and lows about 8 °C, with about one rainy day in the month. Nights are cold, so bring a warm layer for the evening even if the afternoon feels mild. Mussoorie is much colder, and snow is possible in the hills in winter but never something to count on for one particular weekend. Hill roads here can also close at short notice: on 20 July 2026, in the monsoon rain, the district administration closed the Dehradun–Mussoorie road after part of it sank near Kolhukhet. Before you go up, look at the forecasts and warnings from IMD’s Dehradun centre. Our Dehradun in winter guide has the month-by-month detail and a packing list.

A quiet New Year at Fyonli Nest

Fyonli Nest is a two-bedroom homestay run by the two of us, Shalini and Aarushi. Our Instagram bio sums up the mood we’re after: “Step into the slow, nostalgic charm of Old Dehradun.” For New Year that means:

  • Two bedrooms, the green room and the red room, each with a king bed. It sleeps 4 adults, or up to 6 guests with children aged 2–12.
  • A living room with an indigo arch and teak furniture, for a long evening in.
  • A full kitchen if you want to cook your own New Year’s Eve dinner.
  • Heaters in winter, and a courtyard that catches the morning sun.
  • A pahadi breakfast on request (mandua roti, aloo and seasonal fruit), ₹350 per guest per morning. Tell us the night before.
  • Parking in the courtyard, so the car is off the road over the busy days.
  • Dogs are welcome. Tell us beforehand.
