Season guide

Dehradun in summer: heat, holidays and hill escapes

From April to June, Dehradun is hot by day, busy with holiday traffic heading for the hills, and long on daylight. We live here, so this is how we read the season: when the heat peaks, when the roads fill up, and how to use the hills without spending the holiday in a queue.

How hot Dehradun gets in summer

IMD’s Dehradun office counts March to May as the summer season, with the monsoon taking over at the end of June. For a holiday, the useful window is April to June, and it splits cleanly into three. April is warm and dry. May is the hottest month of the year. June is just as hot at the start, then turns humid and stormy as the monsoon gets close.

MonthDehradun high / lowRain (rainy days)Thunder daysMussoorie high / low
April32.5 / 17.4 °C32.9 mm (2.7)4.720.6 / 11.5 °C
May35.3 / 21.2 °C51.4 mm (3.8)8.923 / 14.3 °C
June34.1 / 23.2 °C231.1 mm (10.3)1323.2 / 15.6 °C

Dehradun figures are IMD averages for 1991–2020; Mussoorie figures come from IMD’s 1971–2000 normals book, based on observations from 1971 to 1987, the newest it publishes for that station. They describe a typical year, not a forecast.

The averages hide the shape of the day. IMD’s climate report says that from mid-April to the end of May, Dehradun spends seven to nine hours a day above 30 °C. The coolest moment is around 6 am. Temperatures climb steeply from 8 am and peak around 3 pm. The air is dry, too: afternoon humidity can drop to about 30% on some days, which makes the heat feel sharp rather than sticky, at least until June.

Real summers can run above the averages. On 22 May 2026, the Times of India reported that Dehradun recorded 40.6 °C and then 40.2 °C on consecutive days, and that the Met office had forecast heat-wave conditions at isolated places in the district. Officials advised people to avoid long spells in the afternoon sun and to keep drinking water. Check the IMD Dehradun forecast and the district warnings in the week you travel.

Evening storms and the June turn

Summer here is also storm season. In May, IMD counts about nine thunder days on average, and its climate report says the afternoon and evening, from 3 pm to 9 pm, are one of the two most common times for them; late night is the other. A hot afternoon can end in a dust storm, a squall and a short, heavy shower that knocks the temperature down for the evening. Plan outdoor evenings loosely and keep an eye on the sky from mid-afternoon.

June is two months in one. The first half is hot and dry. From mid-June, pre-monsoon showers start, and on IMD’s records the monsoon itself reaches Dehradun around 28 June, though it has come as early as 10 June. That is why the average June has 231 mm of rain over about ten rainy days, against 51 mm in May. Once the rain sets in, hill roads can see landslides and falling rock, and streams can rise fast. Read our guide to checking roads and weather before any hill drive late in June.

School holidays and long weekends

The heat in Delhi and the plains is the main reason summer is busy here. School holidays for 2027 have not been announced yet. In 2026, Delhi government schools broke up from 11 May to 30 June, and by the last weekend of May, Hindustan Times was putting part of the rush in the hills down to summer vacations.

The central government’s 2027 holiday list for its Delhi offices adds three clusters to plan around. Ram Navami (Thursday 15 April) and Mahavir Jayanti (Monday 19 April) make the April long weekend. Id-ul-Zuha falls on Monday 17 May, giving a three-day weekend from 15 to 17 May, with Buddha Purnima on Thursday 20 May in the same week. Muharram is on Wednesday 16 June. The Id and Muharram dates can move by a day with the moon.

Two other things fill the roads. The Char Dham yatra is expected to start around Akshaya Tritiya, Sunday 9 May 2027, though the dates are not yet announced; check the Uttarakhand Tourism registration site for them. Dehradun is one of the gateways. And the Indian Military Academy holds a passing out parade every June; the 2027 date is expected in mid-June and not yet announced. If you’re coming for it, our IMA parade guide has the planning detail.

Hill escapes, and how not to spend them in traffic

The obvious escape is Mussoorie, about 35–40 km by road from the Clock Tower (the district administration gives 38 km from Dehradun). On IMD’s figures it runs about 11–12 °C cooler by day in May and June. That is exactly why everyone goes. On 31 May 2026, Hindustan Times reported more than 3,000 vehicles a day entering Mussoorie over an extended weekend, jams of over two kilometres, a one-way plan, and by the Saturday evening only tourists with confirmed hotel bookings being let in.

As of 20 June 2026, Dehradun Police said in their weekend plan, reported by PTI, that once Mussoorie’s parking is 90% full, cars are stopped at King Craig and visitors go on by local taxi. Plans like this are announced afresh for busy weekends, so check the latest report and the IMD district warnings on the morning you drive.

Our Mussoorie day trip guide has the parking and traffic detail. Further on, Dhanaulti and Surkanda Devi are higher again, but the road goes through Mussoorie, and HT named the routes to Kempty Falls and Dhanaulti among the bottlenecks that weekend. Chakrata, on a separate road west, is the longer option when you want a full day away from the Mussoorie traffic.

How we’d plan a summer family trip

  • Live by the clock, not the calendar. In June the sun is up by about 5:15 am and sets after 7 pm. Go out early, be back for lunch, rest through the hottest hours, and go out again after 5 pm.
  • Do the hills on a weekday, and leave early. Head up before 7 am and come down before the evening rush. A Tuesday in Mussoorie and a Saturday in Mussoorie are two different trips.
  • Skip the long drive on long weekends. On Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 May, and on any weekend in late May or June, plan a day in town instead: the green campus of the Forest Research Institute in the morning (our guide has the visiting hours), an easy lunch, and an evening walk.
  • Pick your end of June carefully. If your dates are flexible, the first half of June is drier. Late June brings the first heavy rain, which cools things down but makes hill roads less predictable.
  • Eat with the season. Late May and June are litchi time. Our food guide explains what Dehradun litchis are and when to look for them.
  • Pack for sun and storms. Cotton, hats, sunscreen and water bottles for the children, and a light layer and an umbrella for evening storms and the hills.

Staying with us in summer

Fyonli Nest has two bedrooms, the green room and the red room, each with a king bed. It sleeps 4 adults, or up to 6 guests with children aged 2–12, so it suits a family with grandparents or two families travelling together. There’s a full kitchen for quiet afternoons in, parking in the courtyard so the car is ready for an early start, and a courtyard that catches the morning sun, which is the best time to sit out in summer. A pahadi breakfast of mandua roti, aloo and seasonal fruit is ₹350 per guest per morning; tell us the night before.

We’re two friends from Dehradun, Shalini and Aarushi. We live ten minutes away and meet guests at the gate. As our Instagram puts it, “We help our guests to experience the best of local places,” so ask us which days to keep for the hills. See the rooms and send your dates through the booking request on our stay page, or on WhatsApp. We confirm on WhatsApp, there’s no payment until we do, and cancellation is free until 7 days before arrival.
