Dehradun in June: school holidays, litchis and the IMA parade

June is the month Dehradun fills up with families on their summer break, cadets’ parents for the IMA parade, and litchi season. It is also the month the monsoon usually arrives. Here is how June 2027 is likely to look, from two friends who live in Dehradun.

The weather: hot, then the rain comes

June in Dehradun is really two months. The first half is the end of summer: hot, bright afternoons and warm nights. IMD’s 1991–2020 normals put the average high at 34.1 °C, about a degree cooler than May, but the average night is 23.2 °C. That is the big change from spring. Even at 6 am, it isn’t cool.

The second half is when the monsoon usually reaches us. Reporting from the Regional Meteorological Centre in Dehradun in June 2026 gave the normal arrival in Uttarakhand as 20 June. It doesn’t keep to the calendar. In 2026 the monsoon was ten days late, and IMD only drew its northern limit through Dehradun on 30 June. Even so, an average June brings 231 mm of rain over about ten days, with thunder on about thirteen. Even May averages about nine thunder days, so expect the odd storm before the monsoon proper.

So pack for both: cotton for the heat, and an umbrella and shoes that can get wet. Check the IMD Dehradun forecast in the days before you travel, and the IMD district warnings map on the morning of any drive.

School holidays: who else is here

June is peak summer-break month across north India. In 2026, Delhi government schools were shut from 11 May to 30 June, and Haryana’s break was expected to run through June too. The 2027 dates aren’t announced yet, but the holidays usually fall in May and June. Expect more families on the road up from Delhi, and busier weekends on the road to Mussoorie.

If you’re travelling with children, start early and keep weekdays for the big outings. Book trains well ahead on IRCTC and check running status on NTES on the day. Our Delhi to Dehradun guide compares the road, train, bus and flight.

The IMA passing out parade, June 2027

The Indian Military Academy holds a passing out parade at the end of each term, one in June and one in December. On 13 June 2026 the President of India reviewed the parade of the 158th Regular Course and the 141st Technical Graduate Course; PIB noted nine women cadets passing out. The June 2027 parade is expected around mid-June, not yet announced. Wait for the official date before you book travel.

Parade week changes the city for a few days. Families arrive together, and expect traffic diversions near the academy on parade morning. Our IMA passing out parade guide covers passes, diversions and a plan for the morning. The June version of that morning starts in daylight, since sunrise is around 5:15 am, and it gets hot fast. Carry water and something for a sudden shower.

Litchis: the June fruit

June is litchi time in Dehradun. The National Horticulture Board says litchi is harvested in May and June, and that Uttarakhand grows Rose Scented and Calcuttia among other varieties. PIB described Dehradun litchi as widely recognised for its sweetness, red colour and aroma when the first consignment of fresh Uttarakhand litchi left Dehradun for Italy on 18 June 2026.

There’s no announced start to the season. Rain and hail in spring can shorten a crop, so the weeks move a little every year. Our advice: buy for today and tomorrow, not for the drive home next week. The NHB notes that litchis lose their red colour and turn brown within two to three days of picking at room temperature. Keep them cool and eat them after a hot afternoon. Our guide to what Dehradun is famous for has more on litchis, rusks and basmati.

How we’d spend a June week

  • Use the early light. Civil twilight starts around 4:50 am. Do the walks and the sightseeing between 5:30 and 10 am, rest through the afternoon, and go out again after 6 pm. The courtyard catches the morning sun, which in June is the pleasant part of the day.
  • Go to Mussoorie on a weekday, and early. School-holiday weekends bring the most cars to the hill road. Our Mussoorie day trip guide has parking and timing advice.
  • Look at the water, don’t get in. Streams and springs like Sahastradhara and Robber’s Cave can rise quickly after heavy rain upstream, even when it is dry where you are. After the monsoon arrives, we’d check the warnings first and stay well back from the water.
  • Keep a slack day. In the second half of the month, plan one outing a day and have an indoor fallback. A wet afternoon is a good time for the kitchen, a book and a pot of tea.
  • Skip long hill drives once the rain sets in. Monsoon rain can bring down loose rock and close hill roads at short notice. Read our roads and weather guide before any drive into the hills.

As of 1 November 2026, IMD published district-wise, colour-coded weather warnings on its website. Look at the current warnings on the morning you travel; a forecast from a week before is not enough in the monsoon.

Staying with us in June

Fyonli Nest has two bedrooms, the green room and the red room, each with a king bed. It sleeps 4 adults, or up to 6 guests with children aged 2–12, which suits a family on the summer break or a cadet’s parents with grandparents. There’s parking in the courtyard, a full kitchen, and fast Wi-Fi and a desk if one of you has to work. A pahadi breakfast of mandua roti, aloo and seasonal fruit is ₹350 per guest per morning; tell us the night before. Quiet hours start at 10 pm, which helps before a parade morning.

We live ten minutes away and meet guests at the gate. As our Instagram puts it, “We help our guests to experience the best of local places,” so ask us which mornings to keep for the hills and which for the city. Send your dates on WhatsApp or through the booking request on our stay page. We confirm on WhatsApp, there’s no payment until we do, and cancellation is free until 7 days before arrival.
