How hot does Dehradun get in May?
Hot. IMD’s 1991–2020 normals put the average May high at 35.3 °C, nearly three degrees above April, and the average night at 21.2 °C. That warm night is the real difference. In April the mornings still feel fresh; in May they start warm and the afternoons get hotter as the month goes on. IMD’s climate booklet for Dehradun says May has more heat waves than any other pre-monsoon month, and that the small chance of crossing 40 °C comes mostly in the second half of the month.
The average hides the bad years. On 31 May 2024, Dehradun touched 43.2 °C, its hottest May day on record, and the Met Centre said temperatures had been above 40 °C for several days before that. In 2026 the city first crossed 40 °C on 20 May, when Garhwal Post reported 40.6 °C at Mohkampur, with the Met Department warning of heat-wave conditions. So plan for mid-30s, and be ready for a week in the 40s, usually in the second half of the month.
May also has the most thunder of the dry season. IMD counts almost nine thunder days in an average May, against under five in April. Western disturbances bring dust storms, short heavy showers and the odd hailstorm, often in the late afternoon. They cool the evening for a while. In 2026, rain and gusty winds on 30 April broke a spell of 39 °C heat, Garhwal Post reported, with hail in the hill districts. Check the IMD Dehradun forecast and warnings each morning.
As of 21 May 2026, the Senior Medical Officer quoted by Garhwal Post advised people in Dehradun to avoid going out between 11 am and 4 pm during the heat wave, to drink plenty of water, and to get medical help for dizziness, vomiting or high fever. Follow the current IMD warnings for your dates rather than last year’s.
So is May worth it?
It depends on what you’re coming for. If you want long walks around town in the middle of the day, no. Come in March or early April, or wait for October. If May is when the school holidays and your leave line up, yes, it can work well, as long as you plan your days around the heat instead of fighting it.
The good parts are real. Sunrise is around 5:30 am, so you get four or five usable hours before it gets hot. The evenings are long, with sunset after 7 pm by the second week. And Dehradun is still the easiest base for the hills, which is why so many people come through. Who May does not suit: anyone who wilts in heat, and anyone hoping for a quiet road to Mussoorie on a Saturday.
The plains come to the hills
May is when heat in Delhi and the plains sends people uphill. On 22 May 2026, PTI reported that the Dehradun Police were running a special traffic plan for the weekend of 23 and 24 May, saying school holidays and the heat wave in the NCR were pushing people towards cooler places like Mussoorie and Chakrata, with Char Dham, Hemkund Sahib and Rishikesh rafting traffic on top. The plan included diversions around the city and a tiered parking system in Mussoorie, with tourist cars sent to King Craig once local parking was 90 per cent full.
Expect something similar in 2027. The Char Dham yatra is likely to start around Akshaya Tritiya, Sunday 9 May 2027, which would make May, not April, the first month of pilgrim traffic this time. The opening dates are not yet announced; watch the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee for them. Our roads and weather guide lists where to check closures before a hill drive. Pre-monsoon storms can bring down trees and loose rock on hill roads, so check on the day, not the night before.
The May long weekend: 15 to 23 May
The central government’s 2027 list puts two gazetted holidays in one week. Id-ul-Zuha (Bakrid) is on Monday 17 May and Buddha Purnima on Thursday 20 May. That makes Saturday 15 to Monday 17 May a three-day weekend for central government staff and many others, and with three days of leave it stretches to nine. The Id date depends on the moon and can shift by a day, so don’t lock in non-refundable travel on it until the date is confirmed.
This will be the busiest stretch of the month, with the yatra running and school holidays under way. If you can, come on the Thursday before and leave midweek. Book trains early on IRCTC and check running status on NTES on the day. Our Delhi to Dehradun guide compares the road, train, bus and flight.

How we’d plan a May visit
- Live on an early clock. Be out by 6 am, done with walking by 10, and back indoors through the afternoon. Go out again after 5:30 pm, when the light softens. The courtyard catches the morning sun, which in May is the time for tea outside, not the afternoon.
- Keep sightseeing in shade or indoors. Big tree-lined campuses like the Forest Research Institute are best at opening time. Save indoor places, like the museums, for later in the day.
- Do Mussoorie on a weekday, early. Leave at first light, come back down by lunch, and skip it on 15 and 16 May. Our Mussoorie day trip guide has parking and traffic advice.
- Skip the water as a way to cool off. Sahastradhara and Robber’s Cave are popular in the heat, but pre-monsoon storms can raise streams quickly. Stay out of rivers and the pools at falls, even when the water looks low.
- Mind the forest. May falls in the Forest Department’s fire season. Don’t light fires or throw cigarettes on forest walks, and if you see smoke, call 1077. Check the Forest Department site for current alerts.
- Pack for heat and storms. Loose cotton, a hat, sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, ORS sachets and a small umbrella for the evening showers.
Staying with us in May
We won’t pretend we can change the weather. Ask us on WhatsApp how the rooms are in May, and we’ll tell you honestly. What we can offer is a base that suits a slow, early-start kind of trip. There’s a full kitchen for long lunches in, fast Wi-Fi and a desk if you’re mixing in work days, and parking in the courtyard.
A pahadi breakfast of mandua roti, aloo and seasonal fruit is ₹350 per guest per morning; tell us the night before. We live ten minutes away and meet guests at the gate. As our Instagram puts it, “We help our guests to experience the best of local places,” so ask us which mornings to keep for the hills.
