Museums in Dehradun: FRI, the Anthropological Survey and more

Dehradun’s museums sit inside working institutes: a forest research campus, a government survey, a geology lab and a science council. That keeps them small and low-key, but it also means odd hours and the occasional locked door. Here is what each one’s own website says, and how we’d string them together.

Most visitors come to Dehradun for the hills around it, and the city’s museums get skipped. We think that’s a shame. On the western side of the city you can see how India’s forests are studied, how the communities of the north-western Himalaya have lived, and how the mountains themselves were made. None of these places is grand. All of them reward a slow morning. Below are the four we’d point you to, in the order we’d rank them for a first visit.

Museum hours and tickets

FRI museums
Separate ticket on top of gate entry; fees, sessions and closures are on our FRI page, taken from FRI’s own circular.FRI Circulars and Orders, checked 1 Nov 2026
Anthropological Survey museums, hours
10:00 am to 5:00 pm, closed on Sundays and public holidays. This is AnSI’s general line for its museums; the page does not list the Dehradun museum on its own. Travel site trawell.in gives 10 am–1 pm and 2–5 pm and also lists second Saturdays as closed. We go by AnSI, but would phone first.AnSI: Museums, checked 1 Nov 2026

The FRI museums

If you only see one museum in Dehradun, make it the Forest Research Institute. FRI lists five museums on its campus: Silviculture, Timber, Non-Wood Forest Products, Forest Pathology and Entomology. Between them they cover how forests are grown, what comes out of them, and the fungi and insects that damage them.

The museums need their own ticket on top of the gate fee, the campus runs in two sessions, and it closes at short notice. We keep all of that, with dates and sources, on one page so it stays current: read our FRI fees, timings and closed days before you go, and check FRI’s notices page the evening before.

The Anthropological Survey of India museum

The Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI) is a government body under the Ministry of Culture. Its North West Regional Centre is on Kaulagarh Road, on the same side of the city as FRI, and it keeps a zonal museum. AnSI says its regional museums show the local culture and heritage of each region. In a post of 1 December 2023, the centre’s own Facebook page described visitors to its Zonal Anthropological Museum being briefed on artefacts from different tribal groups and periods. It is a small museum in a working government office, so set your expectations by that.

This is the place where the hours matter most. AnSI’s museums page gives one timing for all its museums and doesn’t list Dehradun separately, and travel sites disagree with it. So call the regional centre on +91-135-2655-539 (the number on AnSI’s own list) the day before and ask whether the museum will be taking visitors. Go on a weekday. Entry, per AnSI, is free.

Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology

The Wadia Institute studies how the Himalaya formed and how it is still moving. It began in Delhi in 1968 and moved to Dehradun in 1976. Its S. P. Nautiyal Museum has a relief model of the Himalaya, geological maps, charts, samples, models and short films on Himalayan geology, and, at the entrance, a geological clock that walks you through the ages of the earth.

Here is the catch. The institute’s museum page talks about school groups, university students and guided tours, and it names four open days when the general public comes in large numbers. It does not publish everyday visiting hours. So we only plan on Wadia for those open days. If your trip falls on 28 February, 11 May, 29 June or 23 October, ring the institute’s reception (+91-135-2525100, from its contact page) to confirm the museum will take walk-in visitors that year. The institute is on General Mahadev Singh Road near Ballupur Chowk, which its own page puts at 6–7 km from the railway station.

Regional Science Centre, Vigyan Dham

The Regional Science Centre was built by the National Council of Science Museums with the state science council, UCOST, at Vigyan Dham in Jhajra, further out along Chakrata Road. It opened on 3 February 2016. It is the most hands-on of the four: a fun science gallery, a Himalaya gallery, a technology gallery, a 3D theatre, a small planetarium and an outdoor science park with dinosaur models. The state IT department counted 62,778 visitors in 2024, most of them school and college students.

If you’re travelling with school-age children, this is the one most likely to hold their attention. Remember it closes on Mondays, and ticket sales stop at 4 pm. Since most of its visitors come in school and college groups, we’d go in the afternoon or at the weekend.

How we’d plan a museum day

All four sit on the west side of the city, so they pair well with each other and badly with places on the far side of town, such as Sahastradhara to the north-east or Mindrolling Monastery to the south. Our suggestions:

  • One unhurried day. FRI’s morning session for the campus and two or three museums, lunch back in town, then the Anthropological Survey museum in the afternoon if your call confirmed it’s taking visitors. Don’t try to fit all five FRI museums and all three others into one day. Museum fatigue is real, and the FRI halls are dense.
  • With children. FRI lawns and the timber museum in the morning, the science centre in the afternoon. Skip the Anthropological Survey museum unless they’re older and curious.
  • On an open day. If you’re here on 23 October or 28 February, swap the afternoon for the Wadia museum, after a call to check.
  • On a Sunday or Monday. Sunday rules out AnSI and Monday rules out the science centre. A Sunday or Monday is a better day for the Old Dehradun heritage walk instead.

Two habits that save a wasted trip: check each place’s notices the evening before, and carry a little cash for tickets. Winter days are short and indoor halls can be chilly, so a layer helps; as we said on Instagram before the season turned, “Bring light jackets and enjoy pre winters”.

Museums suit a slower trip, and a slower trip suits a house with a courtyard that catches the morning sun and a desk for writing up notes. If that sounds like your kind of holiday, have a look at our two-bedroom home at Fyonli Nest and send us your dates. We’re from Dehradun, we live ten minutes away, and we’re happy to help you sort out which museum to try on which day.
