The weather: dry, bright and warming fast
April is when Dehradun moves from spring into summer. IMD’s 1991–2020 normals put the average high at 32.5 °C, five degrees warmer than March, and the average night at 17.4 °C. The first week still has fresh mornings. By the last week, the afternoons feel like May.
It is also a dry month. An average April brings about 33 mm of rain over two or three days, less than March or May. What rain there is usually comes with thunder: IMD counts nearly five thunder days in a normal April. Expect a clear morning, a hot afternoon, and now and then a dusty wind and a short storm in the evening.
Some Aprils run much hotter than the average. On 26 April 2026, the Times of India reported that Dehradun touched 39.2 °C, nearly five degrees above normal, and the district administration closed schools the next day after an IMD warning. That was not a typical April, but it shows the end of the month can surprise you. Check the IMD Dehradun forecast and warnings before you plan anything outdoors.
The April long weekend: 15 to 19 April
The central government’s 2027 holiday list puts two holidays in the same week of April. Ram Navami is on Thursday 15 April and Mahavir Jayanti on Monday 19 April. Mahavir Jayanti is a holiday in every central office; Ram Navami is a holiday for central offices in Delhi and optional in the states. Either way, Saturday 17 to Monday 19 April is a three-day weekend for many offices, and anyone who gets Thursday 15 and takes Friday 16 off has five days in a row.
That is the week to plan around. It is the most obvious April break for families in Delhi and the plains, so expect the roads up to Dehradun and Mussoorie to be busier at the start of the break, on the Thursday and the Saturday. If you can, arrive on Wednesday 14 April and leave on Tuesday 20 April. Book trains early on IRCTC and check running status on NTES on the day. Our Delhi to Dehradun guide compares the road, train, bus and flight.
Earlier in the month, Wednesday 7 April is the first day of Chaitra Navratri, and Wednesday 14 April is Vaisakhi. Both are restricted holidays on the central list, so most offices stay open. Expect temples to be fuller than usual during Navratri, especially in the mornings.
The Char Dham season: probably May in 2027
Rishikesh and Haridwar are the usual starting points for the Char Dham yatra, and Dehradun district has its own registration counter at Vikasnagar, so the season changes the feel of the whole valley. In 2026 it began on Akshaya Tritiya, 19 April, when Gangotri and Yamunotri opened; Kedarnath followed on 22 April and Badrinath on 23 April. Online registration had opened weeks before, on 6 March, and offline counters in Rishikesh, Haridwar and Vikasnagar were set to start on 17 April.
2027 is likely to be different. Gangotri and Yamunotri traditionally open on Akshaya Tritiya, and the almanacs put Akshaya Tritiya on Sunday 9 May 2027. So the yatra is expected to start around then, not yet announced. The Kedarnath date is chosen at Ukhimath on Maha Shivratri, which is Saturday 6 March 2027 on the central list. Watch the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee for the Kedarnath and Badrinath dates, and the state registration portal for yatra news. Some travel agents already post early-May dates for 2027; none of them is official yet.
If that holds, April 2027 will be quieter on the pilgrim roads than April 2026 was. What April will still have is the run-up: registrations opening, and possibly some tour groups and traffic towards Rishikesh by the end of the month. If you’re going on to the shrines yourself, registration is compulsory for you and your vehicle on the Tourist Care Uttarakhand portal.
As of 1 November 2026, the Uttarakhand Transport Department’s advice for the yatra season said not to drive on hill routes before 5 am or after 7 pm, and to give way to vehicles going uphill. Read the current advice, and check our roads and weather guide before any hill drive. Pre-monsoon storms can bring down trees and loose rock on hill roads, even in a dry month.

How we’d spend an April week
- Go out early, rest in the afternoon. Sunrise is before 6 am for most of the month. Do the walking between 6 and 11 am, come back for lunch, and go out again after 5 pm. The courtyard catches the morning sun, which is the nicest time to sit out in April.
- Pair a garden morning with a quiet afternoon. Big green campuses like the Forest Research Institute are at their best early in the day, before the heat sets in.
- Do Mussoorie in the first half of the month. It is cooler up there, which is why so many people head up on the long weekend. Our Mussoorie day trip guide has timings and parking; avoid 17 and 18 April if you can.
- Keep Rishikesh for a weekday. A day in Rishikesh is easier on a Tuesday or Wednesday than on a weekend, and late April may add some yatra traffic on the same road.
- Skip the long drive on the busiest days. On Thursday 15 and Saturday 17 April, plan a day inside the city.
- Pack for heat. Cotton, a hat, sunscreen and a water bottle. A thin layer is enough for the mornings, and an umbrella helps with the odd evening storm.
Staying with us in April
Fyonli Nest has two bedrooms, the green room and the red room, each with a king bed. It sleeps 4 adults, or up to 6 guests with children aged 2–12, which suits two couples or a family on the long weekend. There’s parking in the courtyard, a full kitchen if you’d rather cook in on the hot afternoons, and fast Wi-Fi and a desk if you’re stretching the holiday with a few working days. A pahadi breakfast of mandua roti, aloo and seasonal fruit is ₹350 per guest per morning; tell us the night before.
We live ten minutes away and meet guests at the gate. As our Instagram puts it, “We help our guests to experience the best of local places,” so ask us which mornings to keep for the hills.
