Dehradun in July: monsoon rain, Kanwar traffic and Harela

July is the heart of the monsoon in Dehradun. It rains on most days, the valley turns a deep green, and in 2027 the Kanwar Yatra is expected to fall inside the month. Here is how we plan a July visit, from two friends who live in Dehradun.

The weather: rain most days, warm nights

July is when the monsoon properly settles over Dehradun. IMD’s 1991–2020 normals put the average July rainfall at 621.6 mm, more than two and a half times June’s total, spread over 20.5 rainy days. Only August is wetter. If you come for a week in July, expect rain on most of those days.

It is not hot, but it is close. The average high is 30.6 °C, three and a half degrees cooler than June, and the average night is 23.6 °C, the warmest nights of the year. The air is humid, clothes take a long time to dry, and you will want a fan more than a blanket. IMD counts 16.6 days with thunder in an average July, so a lot of the rain comes in heavy bursts with thunder rather than a gentle drizzle all day.

The heavy spells are real. On 9 July 2026, All India Radio reported that schools and Anganwadi centres in Dehradun district were closed for the day after an IMD orange alert for heavy rain. On 17 July 2026, the Meteorological Centre Dehradun issued another orange alert for 18 to 21 July, warning of landslides, rockfalls and overflowing streams. As of 1 November 2026, the place to check before any outing is the IMD Dehradun forecast and its district-wise warnings.

The Kanwar Yatra: expected in late July 2027

Every Sawan, lakhs of Shiva devotees, the kanwariyas, walk or drive to Haridwar to collect Ganga water and carry it home. The roads between Delhi, Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun feel it more than anything else in the year.

In 2026 the yatra fell almost entirely in August. Dehradun Police’s plan ran from 30 July to 11 August, with the biggest crowds expected at the end, on Sawan Shivratri. In 2027 the calendar moves earlier. Guru Purnima is on Sunday 18 July, and Sawan begins the next day, Monday 19 July. So the Kanwar Yatra is expected to run from around 19 July into the first days of August 2027, not yet announced. Don’t count on much notice: in 2026 the Haridwar plan was issued on 29 July and Dehradun’s was reported on 31 July, for a yatra that began on 30 July.

What the 2026 plan looked like

We link the 2026 plan as a precedent, not as a rule for 2027. As reported by Amar Ujala and Dainik Jagran on 31 July 2026, Dehradun Police:

  • barred kanwariya vehicles from entering Dehradun city, and from going up towards Mussoorie at Kuthal Gate;
  • kept the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway closed to kanwariya vehicles, which Haridwar police said was so ordinary travellers had an alternative route;
  • let heavy vehicles run towards Haridwar only between midnight and 4 am until 4 August, then stopped them completely until the mela ended;
  • set up 12 barrier and diversion points in the district, including Asharodi, Kargi Chowk, Nepali Farm and Natraj Chowk.

Outside the district, the effects were bigger. Haridwar police said NH-58 between Narsan, Roorkee and Haridwar would be closed to general traffic on the peak days (Hindustan Times, 29 July 2026), and in Muzaffarnagar all vehicles were barred from the Delhi-Haridwar highway from 4 to 12 August (Mint/PTI, 27 July 2026).

As of 1 November 2026, no Kanwar plan for 2027 has been issued. If your July 2027 dates fall after the middle of the month, check Dehradun Police on X in the week before you travel, and read our roads and weather guide for the other places we look.

Harela: Uttarakhand’s green festival

Harela is the monsoon festival of the Uttarakhand hills. Families sow seeds in small baskets about ten days before, cut the green shoots on the day, and plant saplings. It is a state public holiday: Uttarakhand’s 2026 list, issued on 24 December 2025, put it on Thursday 16 July. The 2027 list had not been published when we checked. Holiday-calendar sites show 16 July 2027, a Friday, but Drik Panchang’s solar calendar for Uttarakhand starts Shravan on Saturday 17 July. So treat 16 or 17 July 2027 as expected, not yet announced. When the state list comes out, we go by it over any calendar site.

For a visitor, Harela mostly means government offices and schools close for the day, and you may see tree-planting drives around town. If the 2027 holiday does fall on Friday 16 July, expect a long weekend crowd from within the state, two days before Guru Purnima.

How we’d spend a July week

  • Come in the first half of the month if you’re driving from Delhi. In 2027 the Kanwar Yatra is expected from around 19 July, so 1 to 15 July should be easier on the road. Our Delhi to Dehradun guide compares road, train, bus and flight.
  • Take the train if you come in late July. Book early on IRCTC and check running status on NTES on the day; heavy rain can delay trains too.
  • Skip Haridwar and Rishikesh during the yatra. The ghats are full of kanwariyas, and the roads are diverted. Keep them for another season, or a day before Sawan begins.
  • Keep riverbeds and waterfall spots for a dry spell, or skip them. Places like Robber’s Cave and Sahastradhara sit on streams that can rise fast after rain. Don’t enter the water, and don’t go at all on an alert day.
  • Plan indoor and garden mornings. The Forest Research Institute campus is at its greenest in July, and its museums are indoors if a shower comes through.
  • Treat Mussoorie as a maybe. Hill roads can close for hours after landslides in July. Decide on the morning, after checking the PWD Uttarakhand road closure report, and don’t drive in the hills after dark.
  • Pack for wet, not cold. An umbrella and a light rain jacket, quick-dry clothes, sandals or shoes with grip, and something to keep your phone dry. Pack rain gear before woollens.

Staying with us in July

A rainy month is a good month to have a kitchen to hand. Fyonli Nest has two bedrooms, the green room and the red room, each with a king bed, and a living room with an indigo arch to sit out the heavy showers. It sleeps 4 adults, or up to 6 guests with children aged 2–12. There’s a full kitchen if you’d rather cook in on a wet evening, fast Wi-Fi and a desk if you’re working through part of the trip, and parking in the courtyard. A pahadi breakfast of mandua roti, aloo and seasonal fruit is ₹350 per guest per morning; tell us the night before.

We live ten minutes away and meet guests at the gate. As our Instagram puts it, “We help our guests to experience the best of local places,” so ask us on the day which outings make sense in that week’s weather. Send your dates on WhatsApp or through the booking request on our stay page. We confirm on WhatsApp, there’s no payment until we do, and cancellation is free until 7 days before arrival.
