The weather: the heart of the monsoon
If you want to see Dehradun in full monsoon, this is the month. IMD’s 1991–2020 normals give August 714.9 mm of rain, more than July and more than twice September. It rains on about 22 days out of 31, and a third of the city’s whole year of rain falls in this one month.
That does not always mean a grey wall of water from morning to night. Rainy days are often a mix: heavy spells, then a break, then cloud low over the hills. Thunder is common, about 15 days in a normal August. It is warm rather than hot. The average high is 30.1 °C, a good four degrees below June, and nights stay around 23 °C. Expect humidity, damp clothes that take a day to dry, and everything outside turning a deep green.
The light changes too. On 1 August 2027 the sun sets after 7 pm. By the end of the month it sets at 6:42 pm, so plan your outings for earlier in the day as August goes on.
Rain alerts, rivers and hill roads
Heavy-rain warnings are a normal part of an Uttarakhand August, and the valley around Dehradun is not exempt. As of 6 August 2026, the Indian Express reported an IMD red alert for very heavy rain in parts of the state, with Dehradun listed among the worst-hit districts and landslides blocking stretches of highway in the hills. A day earlier, the district administration had closed schools for a day, and the state government asked people to stay away from rivers and streams and avoid travel unless it was necessary.
River spots are where August goes wrong. On Saturday 15 August 2026, a tourist drowned at Sahastradhara after entering the river and slipping while taking a selfie, the Times of India reported. Our Sahastradhara page and Robber’s Cave page explain why we skip both in the monsoon. Please don’t step into any stream, pool or waterfall in August, however calm it looks from the bank.
Before any drive in August, check the IMD district warnings for Uttarakhand and the Meteorological Centre Dehradun, the PWD Uttarakhand road closure list, and the Dehradun district notices for school and travel orders. Our roads and weather guide shows how to read them. Hill roads, including the road to Mussoorie, can close at short notice after heavy rain.

The Independence Day weekend: no long weekend in 2027
In 2027, 15 August falls on a Sunday, and the DoPT holiday list for 2027 puts Id-e-Milad on the same day. So there is no long weekend this year, just Saturday and Sunday. The more useful week is the next one. Raksha Bandhan is on Tuesday 17 August, a restricted holiday on the central list. If you can get Monday 16 off too, Saturday 14 to Tuesday 17 is four days. Janmashtami follows on Wednesday 25 August, a gazetted holiday on the Delhi central list.
If you are coming by train, book on IRCTC early for this week and check running status on NTES on the day of travel. Our Delhi to Dehradun guide compares road, train, bus and flight.
College term and drop-offs
Dehradun is a university town, and August is when it fills up again. In 2026, Uttaranchal University started classes for returning students on 27 July and ran first-year orientation from 3 to 10 August. Other colleges set their own dates, and none of the 2027 calendars we checked were out yet. If you are dropping a son or daughter off, check the college’s own notice, then come a day early. Rain and term traffic together can make the first week slow, and a calm day to set up the hostel room helps everyone. Bring an umbrella that can take real rain and shoes that can get wet.
A monsoon workation: who August suits
Honestly, August is not a sightseeing month. It suits people who want to slow down: work through the morning, watch the rain come in over the hills in the afternoon, and go out when it clears. Two or three weeks here in the rains is a very different thing from a weekend dash.
That is where a homestay with a kitchen helps. Fyonli Nest has fast Wi-Fi and a desk, a full kitchen for the days you don’t feel like going out in a downpour, and a living room with an indigo arch to sit in when it pours. If you’re thinking of a few weeks or a month, read about long stays with us and send us your dates.

How we’d spend an August week
- Use the dry spells. Check the forecast the night before. If the morning looks dry, do your errands and walks then and keep the rest of the day loose.
- Stay in town on heavy-rain days. On an orange or red alert day, skip the hill drive. Dehradun’s big indoor and covered places, like the museum halls at the Forest Research Institute, make better rain-day plans than a waterfall.
- Keep Mussoorie for a clear day. In August the view from Mussoorie is often just cloud, and the road can close after rain. If the forecast is clear and the closure list is quiet, our Mussoorie day trip guide has the timings.
- Skip the rivers and the safari. Stay out of streams and waterfall pools. Day visits to Rajaji’s safari zones are closed through the monsoon; see our Rajaji guide for the season dates.
- Pack for wet, not cold. Quick-drying cotton, a proper umbrella or raincoat, sandals or shoes that can get soaked, and insect repellent. Nights stay warm, around 23 °C on average.
Staying with us in August
Fyonli Nest has two bedrooms, the green room and the red room, each with a king bed. It sleeps 4 adults, or up to 6 guests with children aged 2–12. There’s parking in the courtyard, and dogs are welcome if you tell us beforehand. A pahadi breakfast of mandua roti, aloo and seasonal fruit is ₹350 per guest per morning; tell us the night before.
We live ten minutes away and meet guests at the gate. As our Instagram puts it, “We help our guests to experience the best of local places,” and in August that can mean helping you pick which day to stay in. Send your dates on WhatsApp or through the booking request on our stay page. We confirm on WhatsApp, there’s no payment until we do, and cancellation is free until 7 days before arrival.
