Our honest answer
One day is possible. It is also a long day in the car, and it gives each town the part of the day it is worst at. Rishikesh is best in the morning, when the river is quiet and the ghats are cool. Haridwar is best at sunset, for the Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri. The road between them is short on the map and slow in real life. Put the three together and you spend the middle of the day in traffic, then drive back to Dehradun in the dark with the whole aarti crowd.
So our advice, as two people who live in Dehradun: two easy days beat one rushed day. Do Rishikesh one morning and Haridwar another evening, and come back to Dehradun each night. If you only have one day, it can still work. Go in the right order, drop the rafting, and leave early.
This page is about fitting the two together. For the detail on each town (rafting, the bridges, the aarti, parking), read our Rishikesh day trip and Haridwar day trip pages.
The combined day, in numbers
- Haridwar to Rishikesh
- About 25 km. The Dehradun district website puts Rishikesh 24 km upstream from Haridwar (and “approximately 25 kilometres” further down the same page); erail’s fare table counts 22 km by rail from Haridwar Jn to Yog Nagari Rishikesh. It is the busy stretch of the Badrinath highway, so the km don’t tell you the time.District Dehradun (NIC): Rishikesh, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Dehradun to Haridwar by rail
- 52 km between Dehradun (DDN) and Haridwar Jn (HW) stations, by the fare table. By rail you change at Haridwar for Rishikesh.erail: Dehradun to Haridwar Jn, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Sunset in Haridwar, January 2027
- 5:28 pm on 1 Jan, 5:39 pm on 15 Jan and 5:53 pm on 31 Jan. Sunrise stays around 7:08 to 7:14 am all month.Sunrise-Sunset.org: Haridwar, January 2027, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Last light in Haridwar, January 2027
- Civil twilight ends at 5:55 pm on 1 Jan and 6:18 pm on 31 Jan, about 25 minutes after sunset. After that you are driving back in the dark.Sunrise-Sunset.org: Haridwar, January 2027, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Evening aarti
- At sunset at Har Ki Pauri, the Ministry of Tourism’s Utsav page says. The same page also shows a fixed 6:00–7:00 pm slot, which is later than January sunsets; we go by sunset. Either way, the aarti fixes the end of a combined day.Ministry of Tourism, Utsav: Haridwar Ganga Aarti, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Ardh Kumbh 2027
- Ten bathing days in Haridwar, from 14 Jan (Makar Sankranti) to 20 Apr 2027 (Chaitra Purnima). Those in January and February are 14 Jan, 6 Feb (Mauni Amavasya), 11 Feb (Basant Panchami) and 20 Feb (Magh Purnima). Announced by the Mela Officer on 14 Apr 2026 (PTI); the full list is on our Haridwar page.Business Standard (PTI), 15 Apr 2026, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Weekend traffic plans
- For the long weekend of 2–4 Oct 2026, Dehradun Police sent Rishikesh-bound traffic from the Haridwar highway via Saptrishi, Raiwala and Nepali Farm, and, if that jammed, round via Bhaniyawala and Ranipokhari. Plans like this come out before busy weekends; expect diversions on the road between the two towns.Dainik Jagran, 2 Oct 2026 (Hindi), checked 1 Nov 2026
The road between Rishikesh and Haridwar
On paper the two towns are about 25 km apart. In practice this is the main road north to Badrinath and Kedarnath, it runs through Raiwala, and every bus, pilgrim car and day-tripper uses it. On a weekend we would not plan on less than an hour for it, and on a festival day it can be much more. For the October 2026 long weekend, Dehradun Police routed Rishikesh-bound traffic from the Haridwar highway via Raiwala and Nepali Farm, with a longer fallback via Bhaniyawala and Ranipokhari if that jammed.
From Dehradun, the loop looks like this. From the Clock Tower, Rishikesh is about 45 km by road and Haridwar about 50–55 km (our estimates, November 2026). Rishikesh to Haridwar adds about 25 km. That is roughly 125 km in a day, most of it on the busiest roads in the district, with the last hour in the dark.
By train, there’s no direct line from Dehradun to Rishikesh. You go Dehradun to Haridwar, then Haridwar to Yog Nagari Rishikesh. Trains on that short hop are mostly long-distance ones, so delays carry over. We won’t print times; check NTES on the day and book on IRCTC. For a one-day loop, a car or a booked cab is easier to plan around.
If you insist on one day: a January timeline
Do it in this order: Rishikesh in the morning, Haridwar in the evening, Dehradun for the night. Going the other way means Haridwar at midday, when there is little to wait for, and Rishikesh after dark, when there is little to see. This is for a weekday in January 2027, when sunset in Haridwar is between about 5:30 and 5:50 pm.
| Time | What |
|---|---|
| 7:30 am | Leave Dehradun. Sunrise is a little after 7. In fog, wait until you can see the road. |
| Morning | Rishikesh: the ghats and one bridge crossing on foot. Check our Rishikesh page for which bridges are open, then pick one side of the river and stay there. |
| 1:30 pm | Lunch, then leave Rishikesh. Don’t start a second stop. |
| 2 to 3:30 pm | The road to Haridwar. This is the part that runs late. |
| 4 pm | Park outside the zero zone in Haridwar and walk in. |
| 4:45 pm | Find a place on the steps at Har Ki Pauri. |
| Sunset | The aarti. Stay to the end and let the first crowd leave. Last light is about 25 minutes later. |
| 6:30 pm | Walk back to the car slowly and drive home. Dinner in Dehradun. |
What we would cut from the one-day version:
- Rafting. It eats the whole morning, you come off the river wet and cold in January, and the season can be halted after rain. Give it its own day.
- The hilltop temples on both sides. They are morning visits, and in a one-day loop you won’t have a morning to spare.
- Any extra stop on the road between the two towns. Every stop is time you will want on the ghat at sunset.
Don’t try this on a Kumbh bathing day. On 14 January (Makar Sankranti), 6, 11 and 20 February, and the other snan days up to 20 April 2027, Haridwar has road closures and diversions, and the Rishikesh road takes the overflow. As of 1 November 2026 we had not seen a published Kumbh traffic plan for visitors; check the official Haridwar Kumbh 2027 site for your date.
The two-day version we’d suggest
Day one: Rishikesh, unhurried. Leave after breakfast, spend the morning by the river, raft if the season is running and the river allows, and be back in Dehradun before dark. Our Rishikesh day trip page has the rafting rules, the bridges and the way back.
Day two: a slow morning, then Haridwar for the aarti. Have a late breakfast in Dehradun, leave after an early lunch, and time your arrival to sunset. The Haridwar day trip page covers the aarti, parking, the zero zone and the train back.
Two days costs you one more night, and it gets you a morning in Rishikesh, a full evening at the aarti, and almost no driving in the dark. If you have a third day, Mussoorie fits in the morning slot, and we’ve written up three days with Mussoorie and Rishikesh from one base.
Fog, cold and the monsoon
January can bring fog on the plains road to Haridwar, usually early and late in the day. Before you set off, check the IMD Dehradun centre’s warnings and our guide to checking roads and weather. As we wrote on Instagram in October, “Bring light jackets and enjoy pre winters.” By January you’ll want a proper warm layer for an hour on the stone steps after sunset.
In the monsoon, July to September, both towns sit on a fast river that can rise quickly after rain upstream, and the hill roads around them can close after landslides. Watch from the ghats and stay out of the water. That is the season we would least want to rush a two-town day.
Why a Dehradun base works for both
Both towns are an easy day out from Dehradun, and neither needs you to change rooms. Come back each night to our two-bedroom homestay: a full kitchen, heaters in winter, and parking in the courtyard for the car you used all day. On the slow Haridwar day, try our pahadi breakfast: mandua roti, aloo and seasonal fruit, ₹350 per guest per morning, on request; tell us the night before. See the rooms and check your dates, or message us and we’ll help you choose which day goes where.
