Haridwar is where the Ganga leaves the hills for the plains, and Har Ki Pauri is its best-known ghat. The aarti there is run by Shri Ganga Sabha, which has organised it since Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya started it in 1916, the Ministry of Tourism’s Utsav page says. There are two a day: one at sunrise and one at sunset. The evening one is the one people come for, when the lamps are lifted over the water and both banks fill up.
It fits into an afternoon and evening. What it takes is a good afternoon start, a plan for parking, and a way back after dark. This page covers all three.
Before you go
- Aarti timing
- Two aartis a day: the morning (Mangala) aarti at sunrise and the evening (Shringar) aarti at sunset, the Ministry of Tourism’s Utsav page says. Sunset is not a fixed clock time, so the evening aarti moves with the season. Travel sites print fixed times that don’t agree with each other; we go by sunset.Ministry of Tourism, Utsav: Haridwar Ganga Aarti, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Sunset in Haridwar
- 5:30 pm on 1 Nov 2026, falling to 5:17 pm by 30 Nov. It stays around 5:17–5:28 pm through December 2026, the earliest of the year.Sunrise-Sunset.org: Haridwar, Nov & Dec 2026, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Ganga canal closure
- Every year the Upper Ganga Canal is shut from Dussehra to around Diwali for repairs, and Har Ki Pauri can run nearly dry. In 2026 it closed on the night of 20 Oct and was due to reopen on the night of 7 Nov, the UP Irrigation Department said. A temporary sandbag bund brought water back to the ghat on 25 Oct.Dainik Jagran, 21 Oct 2026, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Ardh Kumbh 2027
- 14 Jan to 20 Apr 2027, with 10 main bathing days: 14 Jan, 6 Feb, 11 Feb, 20 Feb, 6 Mar, 8 Mar, 7 Apr, 14 Apr, 15 Apr and 20 Apr. 6 Mar, 8 Mar and 14 Apr are the amrit snans. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced these dates in Nov 2025 and Mela Officer Sonika Singh repeated them on 14 Apr 2026 (PTI). Some travel sites list 20 Apr as a fourth amrit snan; we go by the official announcements, which say three.Business Standard (PTI), 15 Apr 2026, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Zero zone
- No cars, rickshaws or buses on the road from the Post Office tiraha past Har Ki Pauri to Bhimgoda. From the bus stand or railway station it is about 2 km on foot. The municipal corporation has tendered 20 electric golf carts (“Ganga Sarthi”) on that route at ₹20 a person; as of 24 Oct 2026 they were due to start soon.ETV Bharat, 24 Oct 2026, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Parking
- The big lots named in local reports are Pantdeep, Deendayal and Khadda. On the weekend of 7 Jun 2026 all of them filled up, with queues on the highway at Chandi Ghat chowk and Pantdeep. We found no standing Haridwar Police parking notice; check their page before festival days.ETV Bharat, 7 Jun 2026, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Evening trains to Dehradun
- Two trains are listed from Haridwar Jn to Dehradun after the evening aarti: 12055 (Jan Shatabdi) and 22457 (Vande Bharat), on both erail and RailYatri. 22457 does not run every day. Check days of running and live status on NTES, and book on IRCTC.erail: Haridwar Jn to Dehradun (RailYatri agrees), checked 1 Nov 2026

When the aarti starts, by season
The simple rule is the one Shri Ganga Sabha follows: the evening aarti is at sunset. That means it moves through the year. In November and December the sun sets in Haridwar between about 5:15 and 5:30 pm, so the aarti is early. In summer the sun sets much later, and so does the aarti.
You will see fixed times online. Travel sites give their own winter and summer times. Those times don’t agree with each other, and none of them is a dated notice from the Ganga Sabha. So we plan by the sunset table for the day you’re going, and we suggest you are on the ghat at least 45 minutes before it. The steps fill well before the lamps come out.
If you can’t make the trip, Shri Ganga Sabha streams the aarti live on its YouTube channel. It’s also a good way to see where the crowd stands before you go.
Crowds: the canal closure and Kumbh 2027
Dussehra to Diwali. Every year the Upper Ganga Canal, which carries the water past Har Ki Pauri, is closed for cleaning and repairs. In 2026 the ghat was close to dry for five days before the UP Irrigation Department built a temporary bund to bring some water back, ETV Bharat reported on 25 October. An Irrigation Department engineer told Dainik Jagran that water is let through especially for the aarti. The aarti still happens, but if you are coming in late October or early November, the river at the ghat will look thin. Check the news that week.
The Ardh Kumbh, January to April 2027. This is the big one. The mela administration has announced ten main bathing days between 14 January and 20 April 2027, and calls 6 March (Mahashivratri), 8 March and 14 April the amrit snans. You may see 20 April listed as a fourth amrit snan on travel sites; the official announcements we found say three. On those days, and around them, Haridwar is a mela town: road closures, diversions and huge crowds at the ghats. We would not plan a casual aarti visit on a snan day. Pick an ordinary weekday between them, and read the traffic plan for your date on the official Haridwar Kumbh 2027 site and the Haridwar Police page. As of 1 November we had not seen a published Kumbh traffic plan for visitors.
Weekends and holidays. ETV Bharat counts about 20,000 pilgrims a day at Har Ki Pauri on an ordinary day. Weekends add day-trippers from Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and western UP, ETV Bharat reported in June. Christmas falls on Friday 25 December 2026 and New Year’s Day on Friday 1 January 2027, so both are long weekends, and Makar Sankranti on 14 January opens the Kumbh. If you have a choice, go midweek.
Getting there, and the zero zone
From the Clock Tower in Dehradun, Har Ki Pauri is about 50–55 km by road. Rail fare tables count 51 km between Dehradun and Haridwar stations. Coming back after the aarti, give the drive more time than the distance suggests, because everyone leaves the ghat at once.
By car. The last stretch is the part to plan. The road from the Post Office tiraha past Har Ki Pauri to Bhimgoda is a zero zone, with no cars, rickshaws or buses, as ETV Bharat described it in October 2026. You park in one of the large lots outside it, such as Pantdeep, and walk in. Remember the walk back is in the dark, with a crowd.
By train. From Haridwar Junction or the bus stand it is about 2 km on foot to Har Ki Pauri, ETV Bharat reported in October 2026, or take the golf cart once it runs. For the way back, 12055 and 22457 are the two trains listed from Haridwar to Dehradun after dark. We won’t print times here, because they change and trains run late: check NTES for the running status on the day and book on IRCTC. The later train gives you more time after the aarti, on the days it runs.
By bus. Uttarakhand Transport buses for Haridwar leave from Dehradun ISBT, the district administration says. Fine for getting there; for getting back late, the train is easier to plan around.
An afternoon-and-evening timeline
This is for a weekday in late November or December, when sunset is around 5:20 pm.
- Early lunch in Dehradun, leave by 1:30–2 pm. Earlier on a weekend.
- Park by about 3:30 pm, and walk in through the bazaar towards the ghat.
- Find a place on the steps by 4:30 pm. Both banks fill well before the lamps come out.
- Aarti around sunset, about 5:15–5:30 pm. Stay to the end and let the first wave of people leave.
- Walk back to the car or the station, slowly, with the crowd.
- Home to Dehradun for dinner. In summer, shift the whole plan later to match sunset.
As we wrote on Instagram in October, “Bring light jackets and enjoy pre winters.” On the ghat after sunset in December, bring a proper warm layer. You will be sitting on stone by the water for an hour.
On the ghat, and in the monsoon
We suggest watching from the steps and not going into the water. The Ganga runs fast here, and the steps are wet and crowded. In the monsoon, from July to September, the river can rise quickly after rain in the hills. Check the Haridwar district and police pages, and our list of where to check roads and weather, before you leave. July also brings the Kanwar Yatra, when the town is packed with pilgrims; we wouldn’t pick those weeks for an aarti trip.
Keep your phone charged and agree on a meeting point before the aarti starts. In a crowd that size it is easy to lose each other. Save 112 for emergencies.
What to pair it with, and what to skip
Haridwar and Rishikesh are close, and it’s tempting to do both in a day. We wouldn’t. Rishikesh wants a morning; the Haridwar aarti wants an evening; the drive between them is often slow. Do Rishikesh on a separate day. If you want something before the aarti, keep it within walking distance of the ghat, and save the hilltop temples for a morning visit when you aren’t watching the clock.
One of the things we wrote on Instagram is “We help our guests to experience the best of local places.” For Haridwar, that mostly means the timing. Before you settle on a date, check it against the snan days above and the long weekends, and ask us on WhatsApp if you’re unsure.
Why come back to Dehradun
Haridwar fills up, especially in the Kumbh months. Coming back means a warm room, a full kitchen and your car in the courtyard, and the next morning free for Old Dehradun. Our place sleeps four adults in the green and red rooms, with heaters in winter. See the rooms and check your dates.
If you’d like a pahadi breakfast the morning after, mandua roti, aloo and seasonal fruit, it is ₹350 per guest per morning, on request. Tell us the night before.
