Char Dham Yatra from Dehradun: a rest night before, and after

Many families fly or take the train into Dehradun and start the yatra from here. Here is what is announced for the 2027 season, what isn’t yet, where to register and book helicopters, and why one quiet night at each end of the trip makes a difference.

When the 2027 yatra dates are announced

The temples close for winter each autumn. In 2026 Kedarnath and Yamunotri were due to close on 11 November and Badrinath, the last, on 16 November. As of 1 November 2026, none of the 2027 opening dates has been announced. They are fixed in stages, by ceremony, and the pattern is worth knowing because it tells you when to book.

  • Badrinath: announced on Basant Panchami at the Tehri royal palace in Narendra Nagar. In 2027 Basant Panchami is on Thursday 11 February, so expect the date that day.
  • Kedarnath: announced on Mahashivratri at the Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath, the winter seat of Kedarnath. In 2027 that is Saturday 6 March.
  • Gangotri and Yamunotri: these traditionally open on Akshaya Tritiya, which in 2027 is expected around 8–9 May. Wait for the temple committees to confirm.

So for 2027 the yatra is expected to start around early May, not yet announced. That is later than 2026, when the season began on 19 April. Check the Badrinath and Kedarnath dates on the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee’s website once they are declared.

Please don’t book flights, trains or a stay with us on an expected date alone. Wait for the announcement. Cancellation with us is free until 7 days before arrival, but tickets and other bookings may not be.

Registration: only on the official portal

Registration is compulsory for the Char Dham and Hemkund Sahib, for every pilgrim and for your vehicle if you drive. It is free. You do it on the Tourist Care Uttarakhand portal (registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in) or on the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app. You create a tour with your dates, the Dhams and the number of people, then download the Yatra Registration Letter with a QR code. That letter is checked when you reach each shrine.

In 2026 online registration opened on 6 March, about six weeks before the first temple opened, and officials said pilgrims without registration would not be allowed into the shrines. Offline counters came later, two days before the yatra, at Rishikesh, Haridwar and Vikasnagar in Dehradun district. For 2027, register online before you travel rather than counting on a counter. If you’re staying with us the night before, do it from home in the week before you travel, print the letter, and keep a copy on every phone.

Helicopters: IRCTC HeliYatra only

For Kedarnath, helicopter tickets are sold online only on IRCTC HeliYatra (heliyatra.irctc.co.in). You need your yatra registration number before you can book, and one user ID can book at most two tickets of up to six passengers each. Bookings open in batches for set travel windows; in October 2026, for example, booking opened on 9 October for journeys from 16 October to 9 November.

Fake helicopter booking sites are a real problem every season. Uttarakhand Police have warned pilgrims to book only on the official website, to be wary of links sent on social media or WhatsApp, and never to transfer money to a personal bank account. If you are cheated, call 1930 or report it at cybercrime.gov.in. Our advice is simple: type the address yourself. Don’t click a link from an ad, a search result or a message.

Why a rest night in Dehradun helps

The yatra is long. IRCTC HeliYatra puts Kedarnath at about 3,583 m, reached by a 16 km uphill trek from Gaurikund, with ponies and porters available, or by helicopter. The roads up are mountain roads, and a delay anywhere pushes everything back. Starting the first day tired, straight off an overnight train or a late flight, makes it harder.

The night before

  • Arrive in daylight if you can. Check-in with us is from 2 pm. That gives you an afternoon to unpack, check the registration letters, and sleep early.
  • Pack once, in two bags. A small bag for the shrine days, with the registration letter, ID for everyone, medicines and warm layers (the official checklist asks for a jacket, shawl and gloves), and a bigger bag for the car.
  • Make food for the road. The house has a full kitchen, so you can make parathas and a flask of tea the night before an early start.
  • Check the roads and weather that evening, not just the week before. We explain how in our guide to checking roads and weather.

The night after

Coming back down, most families are tired, sore from the walk and short on sleep. A night in Dehradun before a flight or train home means you don’t have to rush from the hills straight to the airport. Sleep in, have a slow pahadi breakfast in the courtyard, and leave by the 11 am check-out. Check-in is from 2 pm. Tell us roughly when you expect to arrive, and we’ll meet you at the gate.

Monsoon, landslides and the shoulder seasons

The yatra runs from spring into November, and the monsoon in between brings landslides. In 2026 the yatra was halted more than once. As of 26 September 2026, ETV Bharat reported that the authorities had suspended the Char Dham Yatra, the Hemkund Sahib pilgrimage and trekking for two days on a red alert, and that earlier that week the yatra had been halted for over two days after a landslide near Chirbasa on the Kedarnath trekking route. Officials also told people already in the hills to stay away from rivers and streams.

If you can choose, families with older relatives or small children often find the weeks before the monsoon and after it easier to plan around. Whatever the month, keep a spare day at the end, check IMD’s Dehradun centre and the PWD Uttarakhand road closure report before each leg, and follow what the district administration says over any schedule.

What we’d tell a friend

We’re Shalini & Aarushi, two friends from Dehradun, and we live ten minutes from the house. Here’s what we’d say to a friend doing the yatra from here.

  • Don’t sightsee the day before. A trip to Mussoorie on the way in is tempting. Save it for the way back, if anyone still has the energy.
  • Keep the return flexible. If you’re booking a train, check its running status on NTES before you leave the hills, and book on IRCTC only once the temple dates are announced.
  • If you’re flying, our page on getting from Jolly Grant Airport to the city covers the airport side.
  • Passing through Haridwar? Our Haridwar day trip page helps if you want to see the Ganga Aarti too.

Staying at Fyonli Nest around the yatra

Fyonli Nest is a two-bedroom home with two king rooms, the green room and the red room, a living room with an indigo arch, teak furniture and a full kitchen. It sleeps 4 adults, or up to 6 guests with children aged 2–12, so it suits parents with grandparents, or two couples travelling together. A group of six adults won’t fit, and we’d rather tell you now.

  • Parking in the courtyard, if you’re driving your own registered car up.
  • A pahadi breakfast on request (mandua roti, aloo and seasonal fruit), ₹350 per guest per morning. Tell us the night before.
  • Fast Wi-Fi and a desk, for checking registrations and bookings.
  • Quiet after 10 pm, which suits an early night.

Send your dates on WhatsApp or through the request form on our stay page. If you need a night before and a night after, send both and we’ll confirm them together. We confirm on WhatsApp, there’s no payment until we do, and cancellation is free until 7 days before arrival.
