Dehradun airport to city: getting from Jolly Grant into town

Jolly Grant, Dehradun’s airport, sits south of the city, closer to Rishikesh than to the Clock Tower. Here is how the ride into town works: prepaid taxis, the cab apps and the Smart City bus, with what we’d check before you land.

Distance to the city
About 20–25 km. The district administration puts the airport 20 km from the city centre and says a taxi takes 40 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. Wikipedia, citing AAI, puts it 25 km south of the city. We plan on about 25 km to the Clock Tower.District Dehradun: How to reach, checked 1 Nov 2026

Where the airport is

Dehradun Airport (code DED) is in Jauligrant, near Doiwala, south-east of the city on the road to Rishikesh. Most people here just call it Jolly Grant. It is run by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). Wikipedia, citing AAI figures, puts it about 25 km from Dehradun, 20 km from Rishikesh and 35 km from Haridwar. So if you are going to Rishikesh first, you are already most of the way there.

The terminal is new. Its first phase opened in October 2021 and the second in February 2024, with 48 check-in counters and parking for about 500 vehicles. It handled about 18.7 lakh passengers in 2025–26, on AAI’s count. That is a lot for one road into town, which is why the timing of your flight matters more than you might think.

The prepaid taxi counter

AAI lists a pre-paid taxi service at Dehradun Airport, along with general taxis and car rental. The local operators’ group is the Jolly Grant Prepaid Taxi Service Union, which is how Dainik Jagran named it in February 2026. A prepaid taxi is the simplest option if you land tired, with children, or with a lot of luggage, because the fare is settled before the ride rather than argued over at the end.

We don’t print fares on this page. They change, and we would rather you see the real number at the counter than an old one from us. Two things we do suggest: keep your receipt until you reach your door, and agree the total, including any toll or parking, before the car moves.

Uber, Ola and Rapido: check the app

Uber lists Dehradun as a city it serves, and travellers on the city’s Reddit forum said in September 2026 that Uber and Rapido do take rides on the airport route. The airport itself is the complicated part.

  • What the airport says. As of 18 February 2026, Dainik Jagran reported that the airport director said any app cab licensed by the government can operate at the airport, and that AAI has no right to stop it.
  • What the taxi union says. The same report said the prepaid taxi union warned of an agitation, arguing that local families gave their land for the airport and the work should stay with them. Police wrote to the taxi operators warning against protests held without permission.
  • What travellers report. In an October 2026 thread on the city’s Reddit forum, a resident replied that app cabs could drop at the airport but pickups there were not being allowed, and others in September said drivers asked them to walk out of the airport before booking. Friction like this goes back years: the Times of India reported clashes at the airport in 2018, when the transport department said there was no restriction on app cabs there.

So our advice is simple. Open the app when you land and see whether a car accepts. If a driver asks you to walk out to the main road, or cancels, don’t argue; go back to the prepaid counter. We would not plan a late-night arrival around an app pickup.

The Smart City electric bus

AAI lists a city bus service at the airport, run by Dehradun Smart City Ltd (DSCL), and DSCL’s site lists an E-Bus Service. DSCL has posted that its AC electric bus runs between the ISBT, the main bus station near Clement Town in the south of the city, and the airport, and residents described the same airport–ISBT bus in autumn 2026. From the ISBT you can take a city bus, an auto or a cab app onward.

We are not printing bus times. Residents say the timings vary and the wait can be long, and we found no current official timetable. Call the DSCL helpline, 1800 180 2525, before you fly, and treat the bus as a good option for an unhurried daytime arrival with light bags, not for a tight connection.

Char Dham season: when the airport gets busy

Jolly Grant is the main airport for pilgrims heading to the Char Dham shrines, and AAI lists all four among its nearby tourist places. In 2026 the yatra began on 19 April, when Gangotri and Yamunotri opened, with Kedarnath on 22 April and Badrinath on 23 April. The shrines close for winter on 10 November (Gangotri), 11 November (Kedarnath and Yamunotri) and 16 November (Badrinath), so the first half of this November is still yatra time.

In those months, plan for longer waits at the taxi counter, more groups being met at arrivals, and a busier road towards Rishikesh and Haridwar. The 2027 opening dates are not yet announced. Gangotri and Yamunotri opened on Akshaya Tritiya in 2026, so expect them around Akshaya Tritiya again, which the almanacs put on 9 May 2027. Watch the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee for the official dates.

Our advice, from two friends who live here

  • Land in daylight if you can. The airport road is easier to judge, the bus may still be running and you have more choice at the counter. In winter the sun sets around 5:30 pm; our winter guide has the details.
  • Mind the gap before check-in. Check-in at Fyonli Nest is from 2 pm. If your flight lands in the morning, an early lunch in the city or a slow drive in makes more sense than rushing.
  • Send us your arrival time. We live ten minutes away and meet guests at the gate, so a WhatsApp message when you leave the airport helps us be there.
  • Pair it with Rishikesh on the way out, not the way in. The airport is nearer Rishikesh than Dehradun, so a last day there before an evening flight can work. Leave a generous margin in yatra season.
  • Coming in the monsoon? Heavy rain can slow every road in the state. Look at IMD’s warnings and the road updates the evening before; we keep the links in how to check roads and weather.

Flying isn’t the only way up. If you are coming from Delhi, the train, the bus and the road are worth comparing door to door before you book a flight. See Delhi to Dehradun.

When you know your dates, see the rooms and send us a request. We confirm on WhatsApp, and there is no payment until we do.
