Getting around: what we checked
- Cab apps
- Uber lists Dehradun as a city it serves, with Uber Go. In a September 2026 thread on the city’s Reddit forum, residents said Uber and Rapido work in the city, and mentioned Ola too. Open the app to see what is available on your day.Uber: Dehradun, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Vikrams (shared tempos)
- Garhwal Post reported 516 registered Vikrams in Dehradun in December 2025. ETV Bharat put the number of Vikrams and Magic vans together at about 400 in August 2026. The counts differ; either way, there are a few hundred.Garhwal Post, 19 Dec 2025, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Vikram seating rule
- After a Nainital High Court order, Vikrams may carry six passengers plus the driver, and nobody sits beside the driver. The transport department seized 79 Vikrams for overloading, and the union went on strike, in December 2025.Garhwal Post, 19 Dec 2025, checked 1 Nov 2026
- City buses
- About 170 private city buses and 30 Smart City electric buses, according to ETV Bharat in August 2026. ETV Bharat also reported 100 more electric buses coming to Dehradun under the PM e-Bus scheme; the transport minister said the scheme’s buses would run on outer routes such as Dehradun to Rishikesh, Haridwar and Roorkee, with the route plan still being prepared.ETV Bharat, 19 Aug 2026, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Smart City e-bus disruption
- As of 4 September 2026, ETV Bharat reported all 30 Smart City electric buses off the road because of a drivers’ strike; Construction World said on 7 September that the strike was continuing. We found no report of when service resumed, so check with Dehradun Smart City before relying on one.ETV Bharat, 4 Sep 2026, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Uttarakhand Roadways strike
- Uttarakhand Transport Corporation staff began an indefinite strike at 6 am on Friday 30 October 2026, with about 60% of ordinary buses off the road in Dehradun (Dainik Jagran). On 31 October, after talks with the transport minister, the union put the strike off until 1 December 2026 and staff were called back to duty. Check the news before you count on a UTC bus.Dainik Jagran, 31 Oct 2026, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Renting a scooter
- RTO Dehradun says a rental two-wheeler must be registered as a commercial vehicle, with fitness, tax, permit, pollution and insurance papers you can check on the mParivahan app. Carry a valid driving licence. It warned that both rider and rental agency can face action (30 April 2026).RTO Dehradun on Instagram, 30 Apr 2026, checked 1 Nov 2026
- Helmets
- Both the rider and the pillion must wear a helmet. In October 2026 Dehradun traffic police said they would restart manual challans for this, after helmet violations rose from 2,835 in 2025 to 4,943 in 2026.Pioneer Edge, 22 Oct 2026, checked 1 Nov 2026
The short answer
For sights inside the city, cab apps and the odd Vikram ride are enough. For anything up a hill, a car with a driver is easier than driving yourself. The bus is cheap and fine for the main roads, as long as you check it’s running.
Dehradun is a valley city that keeps growing outwards. Most things visitors want to see are on its edges, not in the middle. Robber’s Cave is about 5 km from the Clock Tower and the Forest Research Institute about 5 km. Sahastradhara is about 15 km out, and Mussoorie about 35–40 km up the hill. The railway station is 1–2 km from the city centre, on the district administration’s figures. Distances are small. Traffic is the part that eats the day.
Cab apps: Uber, Rapido and Ola
Uber lists Dehradun as a city it serves, with Uber Go, its basic car. Residents on the city’s Reddit forum said in September 2026 that Uber and Rapido both work, and Ola came up in the same thread.
Which services show up, and how long you wait, changes with the time of day and where you are. So check the app on the day rather than trusting anyone’s list, ours included. A few things to plan for:
- Plan the ride back. Out at Sahastradhara or the edges of town, a return cab can take longer to find than one in the centre. If you are going somewhere quiet, ask the driver to wait, or book your ride back before the light goes.
- Tolls. Residents in the same thread said the app fare already includes tolls, and warned that some drivers ask for toll money on top. Settle it before the ride starts.
- The airport is its own story. Residents in the same September 2026 thread said the local taxi union objects to app pickups at Jolly Grant. We cover what we found in Jolly Grant Airport to the city.
Autos and e-rickshaws
You can still flag down an auto on the main roads, and the apps may offer autos too. With a street auto, agree the fare before you get in, and say exactly where you’re going. E-rickshaws work the side streets and short hops; police barred them from the city’s main routes some years ago, Rajya Sameeksha reported in 2023, so don’t expect one to take you across town.
Vikrams: Dehradun’s shared tempos
A Vikram is a big three-wheeler that runs a fixed route and picks people up along the way, like a small bus. You wave one down on its route and pay the driver when you get off. Each route has a number, and locals know them by number or by where they go. It is the cheapest way across town and a very Dehradun thing to do once.
In a Dehradun Police traffic plan for Republic Day 2026, reported by ETV Bharat, the routes were named like this:
| Route | Known as | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Raipur route | The Raipur side, east of the city |
| 3 | Dharampur route | Dharampur, south-east of the centre |
| 5 | ISBT route | The main bus station (ISBT) |
| 8 | Kanwali route | Kanwali Road, west of the centre |
| — | Premnagar route | Premnagar, out west |
| — | Rajpur route | Rajpur Road, north towards the hills |
A 2023 letter from the regional transport authority, reported by Rajya Sameeksha, also mentioned Sahastradhara–Parade Ground and Raipur–Parade Ground routes, and a Rajpur–Clock Tower route. Routes get cut back or diverted, especially around the Clock Tower and Parade Ground and on festival days. Before you get in, tell the driver where you want to go and check that he is going there.
A few things to know:
- No front seat. Since a High Court order, nobody may sit beside the driver, and the transport department has been checking for overloading. As of December 2025, Garhwal Post said fines for violations could reach ₹20,000.
- Strikes happen. The Vikram union stopped all its vehicles in December 2025. If the street seems empty of them, that may be why; open a cab app instead.
- Keep bags small. There is little room for luggage. For the station or the bus stand with suitcases, take a cab.
City buses and the Smart City e-bus
Dehradun has two kinds of city bus: private city buses, about 170 of them according to ETV Bharat in August 2026, and 30 electric buses run under Dehradun Smart City. The electric buses started on the ISBT–Rajpur Road stretch in early 2021, the Times of India reported, with stops at places such as Saharanpur Chowk, the railway station and Dilaram Chowk. Dehradun Smart City has also run an electric bus between the ISBT and the airport.
The catch is reliability. As of 4 September 2026, ETV Bharat reported all 30 electric buses off the road because the drivers were on strike, and residents on the city’s Reddit forum describe the airport bus as “pretty random”. We don’t print bus times. If a bus fits your plan, check with Dehradun Smart City the day before, and keep a cab app as your back-up.
For Mussoorie, Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) buses leave from the Mussoorie bus stand next to the railway station. UTC staff struck on 30 and 31 October 2026, and as of 31 October the union had put the strike off until 1 December, Dainik Jagran and ETV Bharat reported. Check UTC’s bus list and the news before you count on one. Our Mussoorie day trip page has the rest.
Renting a scooter
A scooter is a good way to see the city on a clear winter day. If you rent one, follow RTO Dehradun’s own checklist: the scooter should be registered as a commercial vehicle, with its papers showing on the mParivahan app, and you should carry your driving licence. Both of you need helmets. Dehradun traffic police said in October 2026 that they were restarting manual challans for riders and pillions without one.
The hairpins. Think hard before you take a rented scooter up to Mussoorie. The road climbs in tight, steep hairpin bends, buses and taxis swing wide to get round them, and the ride down in the cold is harder than the ride up. If you don’t already ride hill roads at home, this is not the place to learn. Mussoorie’s own traders asked for a policy on rental two-wheelers in May 2026, Hindustan Times reported. Take the bus or a car with a driver.
Do you need a car? It depends on the plan
Here is how we would answer it for the trips people usually plan.
| Your plan | What we’d do |
|---|---|
| City sights: FRI, the Clock Tower, Paltan Bazaar | We’d skip the car. Cab apps between sights, and walk the old bazaar. The roads round the Clock Tower are the busiest in town. |
| Sahastradhara or Robber’s Cave | A cab app there, and ask the driver to wait or come back. A car helps if you have children and a lot of bags. ETV Bharat reported Robber’s Cave closed after the 16 September 2025 cloudburst; see our Robber’s Cave page for its status before you go. |
| Mussoorie for the day | The bus, or a taxi with a driver. Your own car works better on a weekday; Mussoorie residents told Hindustan Times in May 2026 of an acute parking shortage and weekend jams. |
| Rishikesh or Haridwar | A car with a driver is simplest for an evening aarti and the drive back after dark. Buses run, but plan the return. |
| Several day trips, or Chakrata and Dhanaulti | This is when a car earns its keep, ideally with a driver who knows the hill roads. |
| A long stay, working from home | Apps for errands, and hire a car for the odd weekend trip rather than for the whole stay. |
If you do drive in, there is parking in our courtyard, so the car is off the street and ready in the morning.
Our advice, from two friends who live here
- Start early. Mornings are calmer on every road. Weekend afternoons, especially on the roads up to Mussoorie and out to Sahastradhara, are the slowest.
- Pair places that sit on the same side of town. FRI and Robber’s Cave are both on the north-west side, so they pair well. Sahastradhara is out to the north-east; give it a half day of its own.
- Don’t plan around one mode. Buses, Vikrams and app cabs have all had strikes or disputes in the past year. Keep two options on your phone.
- In the monsoon, check before any hill drive. Rain can close roads at short notice. We keep the links we use in how to check roads and weather.
- Ask us. As we say on our Instagram, “We help our guests to experience the best of local places.” Tell us your plan and we’ll tell you how we’d move around for it.
