Day trip

Chakrata from Dehradun, via Kalsi and Tiger Falls: one long day, or a night up there?

Chakrata is the quiet cantonment hill town north-west of Dehradun, with Ashoka’s rock edict at Kalsi on the way up and Tiger Falls in the forest beyond. Here is the road, what to check before you go, and our honest answer on whether one day is enough.

A Chakrata day from Dehradun usually means three things: the old cantonment town itself, the deodar forest around it, and Tiger Falls. Kalsi, on the way up, is easy to drive past, and it is the stop we would never skip. This page takes the road in order, from Dehradun to the falls.

Chakrata and Tiger Falls: key facts

Distance
About 90–100 km by road from Dehradun to Chakrata, via Vikasnagar and Kalsi. The district site gives 98 km from Dehradun and, on the same page, 87 km from Dehradun railway station. Tiger Falls is about 20 km beyond Chakrata (Wikipedia, citing Uttarakhand Tourism).District Dehradun: Chakrata, checked 1 Nov 2026
Chakrata height
About 2,118 m (about 7,000 ft), per the district administration. It is a cantonment town.District Dehradun: Chakrata, checked 1 Nov 2026
Foreign nationals
Uttarakhand Tourism’s Chakrata page, as quoted by NDTV in June 2023, said only Indian nationals can enter Chakrata, and that foreign tourists may go up to Kalsi and need a permit from the Commandant, 22 Force, to go further. We found no newer official notice. If anyone in your group is not an Indian citizen, check with the District Magistrate’s office in Dehradun before you plan the day.NDTV, 8 Jun 2023, quoting Uttarakhand Tourism, checked 1 Nov 2026
Tiger Falls: bathing
Bathing was banned after a tree fell on bathers on 26 May 2025, killing two. A joint inspection on 2 June 2025 found 17 unsafe trees above the falls. On 8 May 2026 Amar Ujala reported that the falls had been reopened to bathers without official permission, and that the trees had not been cut; the Chakrata SDM told the paper he had no information about any reopening. On 11 May 2026 Dainik Jagran said five trees cleared for felling were still standing. We found no newer official notice.Amar Ujala, 8 May 2026, checked 1 Nov 2026
Tiger Falls in high water
On 18 Aug 2025 the Chakrata tehsildar stopped visitors going near the falls while the flow was high after heavy rain, until it came down again.Dainik Jagran, 18 Aug 2025, checked 1 Nov 2026

The road from Dehradun to Chakrata

You leave town on Chakrata Road, past FRI, and run west through Premnagar and Selaqui to Vikasnagar. From there the road turns north to Kalsi, near the Yamuna, and then climbs through Sahiya to Chakrata. These are rounded road figures from Dehradun, from the sources below, as of 1 November 2026:

StopBy road from DehradunNotes
Kalsi (Ashokan rock edict)About 45 kmThe last stop before the climb, near the Yamuna.
ChakrataAbout 90–100 kmThe district gives 98 km from Dehradun and 87 km from the railway station. All hill road after Kalsi.
Tiger FallsAbout 20 km beyond ChakrataPublished totals from Dehradun disagree, so we don’t give one. The last part is on foot.

The first half is easy plains driving. After Kalsi it is a narrow mountain road with a lot of bends, so it takes far longer than the kilometres suggest. People who get carsick should sit in front and eat lightly before the climb.

Ignore the map’s shortcuts

Phone maps sometimes offer a quicker line through link roads and village roads in these hills, especially on the way to Tiger Falls. Those roads can be single-lane, unpaved or cut by a landslide, and the app often doesn’t know. In November 2024 the BBC reported three men dying in Uttar Pradesh after a map app led them onto a bridge that floods had broken. Our rule is simple: stay on the main road through Vikasnagar, Kalsi and Sahiya, and if the app wants to turn you off it, ask at a shop or a police post first.

Kalsi: Ashoka’s rock edict

At Kalsi, close to the Yamuna, is a large boulder carrying Emperor Ashoka’s edicts, about 10 ft by 8 ft according to the ASI. The Archaeological Survey of India says it is the only place in north India where Ashoka had the full set of fourteen major rock edicts inscribed. The script is Brahmi. The ASI’s Dehradun circle page says the language is Pali, while its April 2026 release, reported by the Times of India, calls it Prakrit. The site has been protected since 1909, and the ASI circle published a book on it for World Heritage Day in April 2026.

The edicts talk about restraint, kindness to animals, respect for every faith and the giving up of war. The thirteenth names five Greek kings of Ashoka’s day. It is a quiet place, and twenty or thirty minutes is enough for most people.

We have not found published ASI opening hours or an entry fee for Kalsi. Go in daylight and, if you are making a special trip for it, ask at the gate. It is also a natural place to stretch your legs before the climb.

Chakrata itself

Chakrata began as a British Army cantonment in the late 19th century, and the army is still here. That is why the town feels so unlike Mussoorie: no Mall Road crowds, few big buildings, and long walks under deodar, oak and rhododendron. Respect the signs around army areas, and don’t photograph anything marked as off limits.

The district describes the country north of the town as the land of the Jaunsari people, with villages scattered through dense forest and the 3,084 m peak of Kharamba above it all. This is the Jaunsar-Bawar region, and the ASI protects two old temples further north, at Lakhamandal and Hanol. Those are trips of their own.

In winter

The high ground around Chakrata gets proper snow some winters. On 27 January 2026, NDTV showed vehicles stranded and police helping people through deep snow there. Snow is pretty, but it closes roads, and a day trip has no slack for that. In January and February, check the forecast and the road list the evening before, and turn back if the police tell you to. Our page on snowfall near Dehradun covers where and when to try for snow.

Tiger Falls: getting there, and staying out of the pool

Tiger Falls drops a long way in one clean fall through forest. Its height is usually given as 312 ft (about 95 m), which is why it is often called one of the highest direct waterfalls in India. Wikipedia, citing Uttarakhand Tourism, puts it about 20 km from Chakrata with a walk of about 5 km through oak and rhododendron. Village roads around here change, so ask in Chakrata how far a car can go now, and how long the walk is from there.

The roads off the main route are narrow, and Dainik Jagran says the falls are busy at weekends. If you are not used to hill driving, take a local driver who knows the way.

Now the serious part. On 26 May 2025 a tree came down from above the falls onto people bathing below. A tourist from Delhi and a local man were killed, and bathing was banned. As of May 2026, Amar Ujala and Dainik Jagran reported that people were bathing there again, without official permission, although the unsafe trees above the falls had not been cut. We think the answer is clear:

  • Look at the falls from a distance. Don’t go into the pool or stand under the water, whatever others are doing.
  • Don’t go near the falls after heavy rain. In August 2025 the administration stopped visitors when the flow rose.
  • Wear shoes with grip. The rocks near the water stay wet all year.
  • Carry water and snacks. There is little to buy at the falls.

In the monsoon

From July to September, landslides can close hill roads like this one at short notice. The falls are at their most dramatic then, and also at their most dangerous, as the August 2025 closure showed. If you go in the monsoon, keep the plan loose, check the road list on the morning itself, and be ready to stop at Kalsi and turn round.

Before you go

  • Forecast and warnings: as of 1 November 2026, the IMD Dehradun centre publishes district forecasts and warnings. Chakrata and Tiger Falls are in Dehradun district.
  • Closed roads: the Uttarakhand PWD road closure dashboard. Our page on checking roads and weather lists the other places to look.
  • Foreign nationals: sort out the permit question before the day, not at a checkpoint. The Bureau of Immigration’s September 2026 post on restricted and protected areas explains how permits work in general; for Chakrata, ask the District Magistrate’s office in Dehradun.
  • Fuel and cash: fill up on the plains, and carry cash in small notes for parking and tea.

Day or overnight? Our honest answer

Kalsi and Chakrata as a day trip from Dehradun: yes. Leave early, stop at Kalsi on the way up, walk in the deodars at Chakrata, and come down in daylight. It is a long day in the car, but a good one.

Kalsi, Chakrata and Tiger Falls in one day: only just, and we wouldn’t. The falls add a hard link road and a walk on top of about 200 km of driving, and the light goes early in winter. If you try it, go straight through Chakrata to the falls first and see the town on the way back. Skip Kalsi on that day.

If Tiger Falls and the forest walks matter most, spend a night up there. Then come back down to Dehradun for the rest of your trip. The hill road is far easier after a night’s sleep than at the end of a very long day.

How we would plan it

We are two friends from Dehradun, and we like helping guests plan days like this one. As our Instagram puts it, “We help our guests to experience the best of local places”. For Chakrata, our advice is mostly about timing and order:

  • Leave early and go on a weekday. The narrow road after Kalsi is slow going, and Tiger Falls is at its busiest at weekends.
  • Pick one big thing. Chakrata town and the forest, or Tiger Falls. Doing both well is a two-day job.
  • Kalsi is the easy win. It is before the climb, half an hour is enough, and it is right on your way.
  • Dress for the top, not the valley. Chakrata is far colder than Dehradun on the same day. Take a proper jacket from November to March.
  • Be off the hill road before dark. Set a turn-back time and keep to it, even if you haven’t seen everything.
