Visiting your child at boarding school or university in Dehradun: a stay for parents

Start with your school’s own calendar

Every school here sets its own year, and they don’t line up. So we won’t restate whole calendars. We link to them, and we pull out the dates parents ask us about most. Dates move, so check the school’s page, or the circular your child brings home, before you book a train or a flight.

• The Doon School posts term dates on its site, for example its important dates for the autumn term 2026. Founder’s Day has been in October in recent years. In 2026 it was the 91st, from 22 to 24 October.
• Welham Boys’ School publishes a full-year 2026–27 calendar. Its year runs from April, with a summer break from late May and students back in July. Founder’s Day is in November. In 2025 the school reported on it at the end of that month.
• Welham Girls’ School also publishes a 2026–27 calendar, with the outings marked on it. The school announced its 69th Founders’ Day for 4 and 5 November 2026. Students return in January, and in the current calendar the school birthday and Investiture Ceremony were in February 2026.

Founder’s Day is when a lot of parents come at the same time. Once the school confirms the dates, sort out your trains or flights and your stay early, so you are not planning in the last week.

Check the address: some famous schools are in Mussoorie

Many people say “Dehradun” for any boarding school in the area. Several of the best known are up the hill in Mussoorie and Landour, not in the city. Woodstock School, for one, is in Landour, and its calendar runs on a different rhythm from the Dehradun schools. In-person classes begin on 1 February 2027, and the year ends with Commencement on Saturday 22 May 2027.

If your child is at a Mussoorie school, staying in Dehradun still works. Mussoorie has no railway station or airport, so the trains and flights come into Dehradun anyway. But the drive up is a mountain road with its own weekend traffic, and in winter or the monsoon conditions can change quickly. As of 1 November 2026, we suggest checking the district and state advisories before each drive. Outings, lunch leave and night leave

This is where a visit often succeeds or fails, so read your school’s rules before you plan the days. Welham Girls’ School, for example, says on its site that students may go out eight times in a four-month term, on set Sundays and holidays. Outstation parents or grandparents may take their daughter out for lunch on specified Saturdays. Night leave is allowed only once a term, and only with parents or grandparents. Students also stay in school over the mid-term break, which is used for school trips.

Other schools have their own versions of these rules. What it means for planning:

• Build the trip around the outing day, not the other way round. Get the exact Saturday or Sunday from the school first.
• Ask about the return time. Welham Girls’ calendar has students reporting back by 6 pm after breaks. If your outing ends in the evening, stay that night too. Our check-out is by 11 am, which is tight if you’re also dropping a child back the same day.
• If you get one night leave a term, make it count. A home with two bedrooms and a kitchen lets your child sleep in their own room and eat what they’ve been missing.

University move-in and visits

Dehradun also has several universities, and their calendars follow semesters, not school terms. Parents usually come for move-in at the start of a semester, for a convocation, or to help with a room change. We haven’t restated their dates here, because they publish them and update them. Look at the UPES academic calendar, the Graphic Era academic calendar, the Graphic Era Hill University calendar, or Doon University’s site, where the academic calendar is linked from the home page.

For move-in, a kitchen helps more than you’d think. You can cook a few meals to send back with them, and do a proper shop for the hostel room without eating out three times a day.

How we’d plan a parents’ visit

We’re Shalini & Aarushi, two friends from Dehradun, and we live here. This is the advice we give parents who message us. It isn’t the school’s advice, so their rules come first.

• Arrive the day before. School programmes often start in the morning, so check yours. Check-in is from 2 pm, so you have the evening to settle and sleep.
• Bring the trains and flights into the plan early. Our Delhi to Dehradun page covers the routes. Check live running on NTES and book on IRCTC.
• Keep one slow day. School days are long for parents too. A spare morning in the courtyard, or an easy outing to the Forest Research Institute, is often enough.
• Skip the big day trip on the visit day itself. Rishikesh or Mussoorie can wait for another day. Your child will want you there, not in traffic.
• Check food rules before you cook. Many schools have rules about tuck and food from home. Ask the school what your child may take back.

Staying at Fyonli Nest

Fyonli Nest is a two-bedroom homestay with the green room and the red room, both with king beds, a living room with an indigo arch, teak furniture and a full kitchen. It sleeps 4 adults, or up to 6 guests with children aged 2–12. That fits two parents with a sibling or two, or parents with grandparents. Tell us everyone’s ages when you message, and we’ll tell you honestly if the group fits.

• Parking in the courtyard, if you’ve driven up or hired a car for the school runs.
• Fast Wi-Fi and a desk, if one of you has to work around the visit.
• Heaters in winter, for November Founder’s Days and January returns.
• A pahadi breakfast on request (mandua roti, aloo, seasonal fruit), ₹350 per guest per morning. Tell us the night before.
• Quiet after 10 pm, no smoking indoors, and dogs welcome if you tell us beforehand. As we say on Instagram, “We’ll take care of the cleaning.”
